A Whimsical, Celestial Wedding at Mercury Hall in Austin, Texas
Ani Chan and Andy Thornburg always found the idea of space incredibly romantic—"the idea that you can somehow find meaning and love with the perfect person in the vast expanses of the universe," Ani says. This notion inspired them to plan a whimsical, celestial-themed wedding with a color palette of deep, dusty blues and pops of burgundy and metallics. Upon entering the venue (Mercury Hall), guests saw constellation maps from the night the couple met and the night of their wedding. The nontraditional outdoor wedding ceremony, officiated by a close friend of the couple, took place in the gardens. "We incorporated space-themed readings from some of our favorite science-fiction authors in lieu of more traditional readings, and we had our dog bring our rings down the aisle," Ani says. Guests sat in white folding chairs, and the couple stood beneath a whimsical circular wedding arch. Constellation-inspired paper escort cards welcomed guests to the outdoor reception. Rustic farm tables held cheesecloth table runners hand-dyed by the bride, as well as centerpieces of leaves, zodiac constellation table names and gold and blue glassware. Andy sported a subtle navy plaid suit with a red tie, while Ani wore an A-line dress with appliqué details and a tulle skirt. "I wanted to incorporate some celestial touches to our looks, so we found some cool compass-themed cuff links for Andy and a beautiful starry headpiece from Etsy," Ani says. "I also opted for some custom nail art with lots of subtle gold celestial accents." The pair served a variety of desserts at the reception. "Andy grew up in Pittsburgh, where they traditionally have a cookie table with treats brought in by various friends and family members. I love that we were able to bring that tradition to Austin with so many friends willing to pitch in," Ani says.
