A Whimsical, Modern Wedding at Royal Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas

It wasn’t just the chemistry class in summer school that brought together Mai Pham (23, Cytogenetic Technologist) and Aaron Pongvachararak (31, Registered Nurse). “There we got to know each other since it was an intense class that required everyone to work together. Over the next 8 weeks, we became well acquainted and attended several class gatherings after the end of class. It didn’t take long before we started hanging out just the two of us and the rest is history!” Aaron says. Geometric patterns and the game The Legend of Zelda inspired the couple’s wedding day aesthetic. “I love anything with geometric design and Aaron’s favorite game is The Legend of Zelda so we thought: ‘Why don’t we combine them?’ A hint of our personalities throughout the wedding is a perfect way to express who we are,” Mai says. Their wedding rings even used inscriptions from the game. Yellow and green were the main colors, used in the flowers, bridesmaids dresses, linens, and even the ombre wedding cake. Mai wore an A-line gown with lace and tulle with a mini tulle birdcage veil in her hair with a butterfly hairpiece. Three bridesmaids wore yellow gowns while four groomsmen wore gray Vera Wang tuxedos with black tie and yellow boutonnieres. Aaron dressed in a similar suit with "Triforce" gold cuff links, a detail from the game, and a similar design tie tack. The pair was married in the back garden of the Royal Oaks Country Club with beautiful scenery of the vast sky, lakes and green. It was decorated with a white paper flower arch. For the reception, guests moved inside where tables were accented with centerpieces of yellow roses, tulips, and hydrangeas. Succulents served as favors at each place setting. Mai and Aaron danced their first song as a couple to Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years” before the DJ picked up the pace with hits like Psy’s “Gangnam Style.” Mr. and Mrs. Pongvachararak exited to guests tossing DIY paper airplanes at them as they left in a Rolls Royce with champagne chilling inside, ready to whisk them off to their honeymoon. —Caroline Eubanks
