A Whimsical Woodland Wedding at the Torrance Woman's Club in Torrance, California

Kiara Roberts (25 and a makeup artist) and Corbin Boughner (25 and works in special effects) combined their love of nature with a palette of sunset-inspired hues to bring their vision for a romantic, vintage-inspired wedding with a subtle woodland twist to life. “I would say that our theme was ripped from the pages of a romantic novel with elements that were more on the vintage side, but also included the beauty and wonder of nature that has always been held dearly by us.” The celebration began with an intimate ceremony at Oak Canyon Nature Center in Anaheim, California. Kiara and Corbin exchanged vows they’d written themselves, under a beautifully decorated handcrafted wooden archway that stood under a canopy of shady coastal oak trees. A trickling stream filled the air with the soft, soothing sounds of nature during the proceedings. Details like wooden crates displaying arrangements of peach-colored blooms and vintage items, as well as hand-painted signs lent the decor a whimsical, old-world flair.

A reception followed at the Torrance Woman’s Club in Torrance, California. Kiara and Corbin transformed the elegant space into a romantic scene, with sophisticated neutral linens, gilded chargers, framed floral table numbers and stacks of vintage books topped with fresh bundles of garden roses and greenery. “This was the perfect opportunity for our creative souls to unite and design a wedding that perfectly expressed our love for nature and my glamorous side,” Kiara says. “Nearly every amazing element of this wedding was a DIY project that my husband and I made ourselves.” In the months before the wedding, Kiara and Corbin hunted down vintage accents, created all the planter boxes and crates used throughout the ceremony and reception, refinished vintage trunks and luggage to match the rest of the decor and painted every chalkboard sign. A vibrant dessert table, complete with a handmade wooden backdrop, playful paper flowers and a shimmery sequin tablecloth served as a centerpiece for the room, while a photo booth provided guests with a way to mix and mingle while they rested their dancing feet. A tip from Kiara and Corbin: “Just have fun! You are beginning a new journey with your best friend. What better way to start it off than to begin creating amazing memories together during the planning of your wedding? Give yourself plenty of time, especially if you plan to do a lot of DIY projects. You can save a lot of money making the decorations yourself, but make sure you give yourself plenty of time to do all your projects, then make a date of it. We would have crate-staining date nights, where we would barbecue and have a few drinks while singing along to Pandora.” —Libby MacCarthy
