An Eclectic, Bohemian Garden Party Wedding in Driftwood, Texas, with DIY Stationery

Alyssa Hassell (31 and a landscape architect) and Mikey James (33 and a graphic designer) tag-teamed their eclectic, outdoor celebration decked out in shades of peach, pink and green. Mikey designed the save-the-dates and invitations, while Alyssa made a watercolor map of the venue to make navigating the sweeping grounds all the easier for guests. Family also played a pivotal role, processing down the aisle ahead of the couple in bright ensembles of their choosing. “Some wore bolo ties and hats in the Texas spirit,” Alyssa says. Other members covered popular songs, from The Beatles to Vance Joy, for the ceremony. The pair exchanged vows beneath an oak tree at an altar made from hanging pampas grass after Alyssa walked down an aisle of rugs lined with swaths of grasses and mass plantings. As for décor, “We wanted the plants to feel like art pieces—sculptural and interesting,” Alyssa says of the tropical mix. “We wanted to create a space that promoted intermingling and walking around,” Alyssa says. Mikey took the lead on designing cocktail hour, which was held on the deck under a massive live oak tree with festoon lighting. The goal: “A colorful, playful space with an intimate feel,” he says. All but one lounge area was awash in peach. The exception, dubbed “the man lounge,” was filled with dark green and black. Lush, mossy plants mixed with structural groupings of painted palms dotted the property, and kokedamas and driftwood sculptures hung from the tented ceiling. As for entertainment, the newlyweds booked a surf rock band for cocktail hour and couldn’t help but take the floor for an unofficial first dance. For dessert, the bride and her mom made the cake covered in pink and silver white chocolate brush strokes. It included a layer of Filipino date and nut cake, known as “Food for the Gods.”
