An Eclectic Intimate Wedding at Millesime in the Carlton Hotel in New York City

High school sweethearts Gloria Sin (33 and a tech journalist) and Darren Shield (32 and an intellectual property attorney) dated long distance for years before Darren proposed on Christmas Eve in 2013. Darren proposed at an ice skating rink. “At the end of the skating session, just as people were starting to clear off the ice, Darren brought me to center ice and asked me to become his wife,” says Gloria. When it came time to plan the wedding they chose New York City, where they currently live. “With family and friends spread across Canada, Hong Kong and America, we chose to host our wedding in Manhattan so we could share our adopted home with loved ones,” says Gloria. They chose the Millesime restaurant inside the Carlton Hotel for the venue. “We fell in love with the look and feel of the restaurant the first time we visited the venue, and could not imagine getting married anywhere else after our initial meeting with Millesime’s event coordinator,” says Gloria. The wedding decor was inspired by a ballet to match the frothy tulle gown Gloria had chosen to wear years before she and Darren had even gotten engaged. “We didn’t want to take the theme too literally though. No one wants to stare at a pair of stinky pointe shoes across the dinner table. Since ballet is all about an abundance of tulle, it made sense to bring the same material into our venue as decoration,” says Gloria. They chose a color palette of blush, ivory and black. and kept the flowers fresh and simple. They also tied in their shared interest — technology and video games — in subtle ways. “Thanks to Gloria’s profession as a tech journalist, we had access to some great gadgets that we incorporated into our wedding. We relied on a wireless speaker UE Boom from Logitech to play our ceremony. Rather than rent a Photo Booth, we were able to print selfies that we took with all our guests using a tiny mobile photo printer from LG,” says Darren.

A tousled undo with a few braids was the perfect hairstyle to show off the tulle one-shoulder neckline of Gloria’s black BCBG wedding dress.

Gloria and Darren kept all of the wedding flowers minimal and fresh. “We really wanted to keep our flowersufffcufffcufffcufffcin ballet class attire, so blush pink became our wedding color of choice. We really wanted to keep our flowers looking as simple and natural as possible, to give the impression that we just plucked them from the garden. We ordered just enough white hydrangeas via BJ's (wholesale) so that we can make the bouquets and centerpieces the day before the wedding,” says Gloria.
Gloria and Darren took wedding portraits at iconic New York City spots around Central park. They even hopped in a Pedicab for a photo op.
The ceremony was held in the bar area of the Millesime restaurant in the Carlton Hotel. The space already had an eclectic mix of sofas and chandeliers, so Gloria and Darren didn’t need to add much in the way of decor.

Gloria’s maid-of-honor wore a blush dress from H&M. “Because my MOH lives in Canada, we had to rely on Pinterest and stores that are available in both countries to find the right bridesmaid dress,” says Gloria. Darren and his best man had a much easier time finding attire. “Darren, on the other hand, wanted to stick with a classic black-tie look, so he and his Best Man just needed a black bow tie and a blush pocket square to be wedding-ready,” says Gloria. rn
The simplicity and minimalism of the wedding flowers carried over into the reception. A few bunches of white hydrangeas decorated the dinner tables.
Dinner was held in the mezzanine of the Millesime restaurant in the Carlton Hotel. During the meal guests had a view overlooking the lobby and a waterfall.
Gloria and Darren’s love of video games inspired they’re creative cake topper. “Because we enjoy playing Animal Crossing games together, we wanted to see if it was possible to order custom cake toppers that look like our avatars in the game. We were so lucky that Geek Mythology Crafts from Etsy was willing to take on this challenge. Our adorable cake toppers were the star of our wedding, and now they sit on our bookshelf to remind us of our wedding day,” says Darren.
