An Eclectic Intimate Wedding at Millesime in the Carlton Hotel in New York City

High school sweethearts Gloria Sin (33 and a tech journalist) and Darren Shield (32 and an intellectual property attorney) dated long distance for years before Darren proposed on Christmas Eve in 2013. Darren proposed at an ice skating rink. “At the end of the skating session, just as people were starting to clear off the ice, Darren brought me to center ice and asked me to become his wife,” says Gloria. When it came time to plan the wedding they chose New York City, where they currently live. “With family and friends spread across Canada, Hong Kong and America, we chose to host our wedding in Manhattan so we could share our adopted home with loved ones,” says Gloria. They chose the Millesime restaurant inside the Carlton Hotel for the venue. “We fell in love with the look and feel of the restaurant the first time we visited the venue, and could not imagine getting married anywhere else after our initial meeting with Millesime’s event coordinator,” says Gloria. The wedding decor was inspired by a ballet to match the frothy tulle gown Gloria had chosen to wear years before she and Darren had even gotten engaged. “We didn’t want to take the theme too literally though. No one wants to stare at a pair of stinky pointe shoes across the dinner table. Since ballet is all about an abundance of tulle, it made sense to bring the same material into our venue as decoration,” says Gloria. They chose a color palette of blush, ivory and black. and kept the flowers fresh and simple. They also tied in their shared interest — technology and video games — in subtle ways. “Thanks to Gloria’s profession as a tech journalist, we had access to some great gadgets that we incorporated into our wedding. We relied on a wireless speaker UE Boom from Logitech to play our ceremony. Rather than rent a Photo Booth, we were able to print selfies that we took with all our guests using a tiny mobile photo printer from LG,” says Darren.
