An Elegant, Old-World Destination Wedding at Iglesias y Convento de las Capuchinas in Antigua, Guatemala

For their spring wedding, Blanca Velasquez and Delgis Mustafa whisked their friends and family off to Antigua, Guatemala, for a romantic affair with a hint of old-world flair.

The couple tapped into the city’s history to give their guests an immersive experience, hosting the ceremony and reception in two distinct, historically significant locations. Unique architectural details, including stone columns, dramatic ceilings and one-of-a-kind masonry, made the rest of the décor decisions a cinch. “The architecture spoke for itself and did not need a lot of décor,” Blanca says. “I wanted to add some greenery and gold accents to enhance the space. I loved the idea of having long tables, and the venue lent itself perfectly to my vision.”

Lush garlands of greenery and gilded chiavari chairs created a naturally elegant ambience for the “I dos,” while bundles of blush roses piled high atop gold pedestals and softly glowing candles infused the reception space with a sense of intimacy and romance.

Blanca’s father surprised the newlyweds and their guests with a marimba band to play traditional Guatemalan music during the reception, and even sang a song to Blanca in Spanish. Another fun touch was the antique horse and carriage that escorted Blanca and Delgis to the reception in style. “It was one of the most beautiful and emotional experiences. My emotions were already running high, but to be genuinely celebrated by the people I passed by was truly unforgettable!” the bride says.

After the last guest left the dance floor, the couple joined their friends at a local bar to continue the festivities.

“Divide and conquer. That is the best advice we got, and it truly helped us by focusing on our own strengths and complementing each other’s weaknesses," the couple says." And, ultimately, do what makes you happy. It is your day and it should be what you want it to be.”
