An Elegant Woodland Wedding at Overlook Lodge at Bear Mountain in Highland Falls, New York

Michal-Anne (32 and a co-principal at Explore Charter School) and Brian Jones (44 and a managing director at Neuberger Berman) planned a relaxed, woodland-chic event in the Catskill Mountains for their late-spring wedding. Overlook Lodge at Bear Mountain in Highland Falls, New York, offered a quaint, picturesque backdrop for the affair and allowed the couple to celebrate with their guests all weekend. “We wanted to have a weekend getaway and spend quality time with family and friends,” Michal-Anne says. “Bear Mountain fit all our criteria. We loved getting married at the lodge and partying all weekend with the people we love the most.” The day started with a ceremony on the Overlook Lodge’s stone patio, an intimate site surrounded by lush forest. Drawing inspiration from the setting, the pair kept the decor simple and organic, draping the birchwood chuppah with garlands of silver-dollar eucalyptus and lining the aisles with fresh bunches of succulents and alstromerias. The pair fused their respective cultures and religions to create a ceremony that felt true to their story and expressed their promises to each other in their own words. “It was important for us to have a ceremony that reflected the power of the love we share and honor the traditions of our families and life together,” Michal-Anne says. “We loved hearing from our family and best friends during the seven blessings and being surrounded by our immediate family under the chuppah.” A lively reception followed inside the lodge, where the newlyweds and their guests danced the night away to ‘90s hip-hop. An airbrushing booth went over big with guests, while a surprise performance by their close friends, plus plenty of silly wigs, ensured that there was never a dull moment. A tip from Michal-Anne: “In New York City you have a huge choice of vendors. Book the folks who will make you feel comfortable on the big day and who will understand what is important to you.”
