A Rustic, Beach-Inspired Wedding at Sandy Hook Chapel in Sandy Hook, New Jersey

Nerrisa Waite (30 and a meeting planner) and Joshua D’Amore (31 and a digital marketing manager) knew from the get-go that a waterfront wedding was in the cards. Lovers of the beach, the couple headed to Monmouth County, New Jersey, where Joshua grew up, to host their early September nuptials, gathering their closest family and friends at the Sandy Hook Chapel in Sandy Hook, New Jersey. The historic chapel is more than 100 years old and is situated along the Atlantic Ocean, offering beautiful views. Enlisting the help of Christiane Lehman of Truly You Events, Nerrisa and Joshua planned a laid-back, beach-inspired affair, starting by choosing a color palette of bright coral, pink, teal and blue hues. They left all the floral decisions to the talented team at Papertini, who created dozens of eye-catching arrangements of full blooms displayed in vibrant blue bottles that infused the Sandy Hook Chapel and their sailcloth reception tent with energy and life. The decor was the perfect balance of rustic and modern, with long wooden farm tables displaying funky chevron table runners. New York-based Silver Arrow Band kept the dance floor packed—even keeping the party going when the rain caused the power to go out. A tip from Nerrisa: “Hire a planner and don’t sweat the small stuff, even if that includes the power going out at your reception for 15 minutes. Enjoy the day, and make sure you take in every moment. It really does fly by.”

Nerrisa and Joshua made sure their dog, Bodhi, was included in all the wedding action and dubbed him an honorary groomsmen for the day. They found a chambray dress shirt and navy tie for Bodhi to wear, allowing him to match the rest of the wedding party.
Nerrisa took a laid-back approach to her bridesmaid attire, letting each of the women choose their own dresses. “My only instruction was to pick something they loved and that they would wear again in any shade of coral,” Nerissa says. “I was so happy with their choices and can’t wait to borrow them.”
Nerissa and Joshua planned a fun-filled cocktail hour overlooking the water with lawn games like badminton, boccie and horseshoes, but unexpected rain meant moving the festivities indoors. “It rained and we lost power, which most might consider a catastrophe, but I think it actually made the day more special in a way,” Nerrisa says. “It’s definitely something that we won’t be forgetting.”
When it came to their guest book, Nerrisa and Joshua put a fun twist on tradition. They created a selfie station at the entrance to the reception and asked guests to take photos of themselves using a Polaroid camera. Guests wrote their well wishes and advice for the couple on the printed photos and placed them into the guest book for Nerrisa and Joshua.
Ye Old Pie Shoppe brought Nerissa and Joshua’s confectionary vision to life by creating a simple three-tier cake with plenty of personality. Each layer of the strawberries and cream cake was decorated with dotted details, coral ribbon and bunches of fresh, seasonal blooms provided by Papertini. A “That’s Amore” cake topper added the finishing touch and provided a playful twist on the couple’s last name, D’Amore.
After the ceremony and cocktail hour in the Sandy Hook Chapel, the newlyweds and their guests headed to the sailcloth tent for the reception. The striking rustic structure was alight with strings of bistro lights and candles, creating a romantic, welcoming ambience, while long farm tables and bright bunches of pink and coral blooms arranged in colorful bottles played up the wedding’s rustic, laid-back undertones.

To balance out the rustic feel of the wooden farm tables and sailcloth tent, the couple kept the linens feeling fun and fresh. Coral-colored napkins introduced a fresh pop of color to the reception tabletops, while chevron table runners introduced a touch of modern flair to the outdoor space.
