Shabby-Chic Wedding at the Barn at Ligonier Valley in Ligonier, Pennsylvania
Nearly seven years after they met at a Bible-study meeting at the Barn at Ligonier Valley, Carla Mattei (23 and a classroom aide) and Michael McDowell (23 and an automotive sales associate) made their triumphant return to that old restored barn to celebrate their nuptials. The day held plenty of nostalgic details for the couple, all the way down to the blush roses in Carla's bouquet. "Blush roses were the first flowers I got from my husband when he asked me to go to the prom with him in high school," she says. "I always knew that if we got married I would have them in my bouquet." She accented the pretty blooms with her favorite flowers (hydrangeas) and baby's breath, because "it always reminds me how beauty can be simple." Carla has never been one for too much color, so she chose organic shades of tan and ivory for their wedding. Rustic, vintage details like burlap and vintage lace fit perfectly with their color scheme and their shabby-chic aesthetic. The couple wove a subtle "key" theme throughout the day—from their save-the-dates and invitations to the "key to your seat"place cards attached to vintage skeleton keys. Old doorknobs and door plates served as fitting table numbers, keys with blank tags gave guests the opportunity to share their "key to a successful marriage." —Meghan Overdeep
