Whimsical Nautical Wedding at a Private Residence in Boothbay Harbor, Maine

Although they met through common friends in New York City, Kate Peterson (29 and a family physician) and Will Barton (29 and works in outdoor industry sales) grew up spending summers in Maine—a similarity that meant a lot to them in the years that followed. Four years after they started dating, Will proposed on an island in Maine with a view of the ocean and Boothbay Harbor. "It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that we'd get married at Will's family home in Boothbay—it's where his parents had their wedding, and I've known since I was little that I wanted to be married on the ocean in Maine," Kate says. "Having everyone we love together at a place that is dear to Will's family, and in the state that has always felt magical and special to me, just felt like a poetic start to our new life together." Kate and Will were married in a field below their summer house with stunning views of Boothbay Harbor—the same spot where his parents were married—under an arbor that Will and his father built. "We didn't need to decorate much, given how beautiful the spot was," Kate says. After the ceremony, the party moved to a tent in a neighboring field, where oysters, lobster and Dark and Stormies (Maine necessities) were served.  As for dessert, "we chose delicious pies from our favorite bakery in Cambridge since you really can't follow lobster with anything but blueberry pie," Kate says. —Meghan Overdeep
