If You Ask Amy: If someone had told me a few years ago that I’d be engaged to Tyler Ferraro, I wouldn’t have believed them. To me, Tyler was the first boy I ever kissed—while watching Napoleon Dynamite, no less—and the reason my mom bought me my first cell phone. I had the biggest crush on him back then, but like many millennial crushes, it ended over instant messenger. Fast forward nearly 20 years: life was chaotic. I was a single mom, finishing my degree, and trying to decide between law school or grad school. With some encouragement from friends, I downloaded Tinder to try online dating. When Tyler’s profile popped up, I swiped right—and then immediately deleted the app. There was no way Tyler Ferraro, the boy I once kissed and thought was a bit of a jerk in high school, would be interested in me. To be fair, I had flirted with him online back in 2020 and got the distinct impression the feeling wasn’t mutual. To my surprise, Tyler asked me out for coffee in the fall of 2024, then again two weeks later for dinner. Everything clicked. We started dating, and he met my daughter, Cecilia—who quickly became his biggest fan and lovingly dubbed him “Ty-Ty.” After I graduated from Whitman, we moved in together and started planning our future. Tyler asked what kind of ring I liked, and we went shopping together for ideas. Eventually, he used my inspiration to sketch and design the perfect ring. On a quiet New Year’s Eve, he proposed—and I said yes! So here I am, writing my side of our story, living my version of a happily ever after with the first boy I ever kissed, our six-year-old daughter, and our golden retriever puppy. There’s no white picket fence, but there is a white fence around our beautiful home—filled with books we’ll probably get around to reading, and more laughter and love than I ever imagined possible. If You Ask Tyler: We first met in high school, introduced by my brother’s then-girlfriend. We watched Napoleon Dynamite, a totally legitimate copy I definitely didn’t download off LimeWire. She had this loud, quirky energy, what I affectionately dubbed “homeschool vibes,” and it stuck with me. But life had its own timeline, and we went our separate ways to explore the world. I went off to college for Software Engineering and began my love affair with the circus. Traveling the world and performing acrobatics with an eclectic group of friends filled my days. Eventually, I landed back in Walla Walla, bought a historic home to renovate, and threw myself into building my career. Nearly two decades later, fate casually reintroduced us, this time via Facebook, where we exchanged a few awkward, overly polite messages. Neither of us said what we were really thinking, but something lingered. One day, after some encouragement, I finally asked her out for coffee. That coffee became a conversation, that conversation became a game night, and our time together seemed to outpace our time apart. Every moment feels like magic, the kind where time bends, and the world quiets. In her, I saw not just someone I wanted to know, but someone I wanted to grow alongside. Now, we’re best friends, professional overthinkers, each other’s favorite person and greatest annoyance. We’re a team — imperfect, hilarious, real — and every day, without fail, we choose each other.
