Our Story
Mel & Kevin

Mel and Kevin first found each other in early January 2016. Mel was resting at home after a stomach illness kept her at the hospital over the New Year’s holiday and Kevin was returning home after a late hockey game. There might be some uncertainty about who started talking to the other first, but one thing is sure: they have been inseparable ever since.

Their first date was to a coffee shop. Kevin spotted Mel crossing the street and walked up to her. Not wanting to overwhelm her, he only had a single rose from the dozen he had brought her. He handed her the rose, kissed her cheek, and said, "I hope you like roses… there are 11 more in my car."

The second date was when Mel brought Manchas to meet Kevin. It was love at first sight. He proposed later that day. Okay, maybe it wasn’t that quick. The three of them added a fourth family member shortly after making their relationship official (that’s right, Facebook). Mel was drawn toward a small and sickly looking cat in the animal shelter. Not being a "cat person," she felt like this cat was the best fit for our family. Two years later, Manchas and Arya are best friends and love sharing naps on the couch.

Mel and Kevin continued to share their friends, family, and things they loved doing. Kevin shared his love for cooking with Mel, testing new and old recipes with her. Mel shared her love for karaoke with Kevin, bringing in nieces and cousins for Disney sing-a-longs.

With their 1-year anniversary fast approaching, Kevin was running out of time to plan the perfect proposal. In their first trip to the jewelry store, Kevin had purchased the ring that Mel had fallen in love with. That was two months before he finally proposed. Pouring rain in San Diego and a blizzard in Big Bear had caused him to change plans for a beach proposal or a snowy mountain top proposal. Afraid that the secret might be let out before his next chance, Kevin called back two of Mel’s closest friends and let her father know that the time had come. Kevin got down on one knee, with Manchas sitting with him and looking up to her Mel with her big eyes. With her family and friends looking on, Kevin asked Mel to marry him in the home that she grew up in.

Mel and Kevin have worked hard to balance work, school, and family with their wedding planning. They’re very excited to share this momentous time of their lives with you and can’t wait to see what life will bring them as Mr. and Mrs. Ampuero.
