Michael and Grace’s story began in the fall of 2021 at Wayland Baptist University. Their first meeting took place at the home of Grace’s best friend, Alexis Shedd. They soon became part of the same friend group, and their friendship naturally began to blossom.
For Grace’s birthday, she planned a celebration in Lubbock. Michael was heartbroken to miss it due to prior commitments, but when his plans ended early, he jumped at the chance to surprise the girl he’d one day marry. Grace was thrilled to see him, especially since she thought he wouldn’t be there.
Just a week later, Michael and his brother, Matthew, were on their way home for Thanksgiving break when, about an hour from home, a deer unexpectedly leapt onto the road. Michael hit the deer, totaling his car. Flabbergasted and Traumatized, he messaged his friends for support. Among those offering love and prayers in the group chat was Grace. Concerned, she reached out to him on Snapchat, checking in and even giving him her number.
Over Thanksgiving break, Michael and Grace exchanged texts and played iMessage games, discussing their interests, dreams, and everything in between. It was during these conversations that sparks began to fly.
Back on campus, they started spending more time together, with Grace often giving Michael rides since he was without a car. They watched movies, hung out at coffee shops, and even wore matching sweaters that Michael had suggested at a Ice-skating event,
Though Michael was hesitant to confess his feelings, afraid of rejection, After lots of prayer, Grace took the initiative and shared her feelings for him. Michael was shocked that Grace also shared the same feelings.
They officially began dating on January 9, 2022, after a date at P.F. Chang’s and a movie. Through their relationship, they experienced many things together: getting COVID-19, surviving two summers of long distance, countless Taco Bell dates, and watching an endless amount of Chiefs games.
On February 3, 2024, Michael planned a special night for Grace. He took her to P.F. Chang’s and then led her to where it all began – Alexis’s house. In the front yard, he’d set up a beautiful scene with string lights, a candlelit path, and a hundred fire sauce packets spelling out “Marry Me.” At the end of the path stood a “Marry Me” sign. There, Michael proposed, and Grace responded with an enthusiastic Yes!
Now, they’re preparing to marry on July 12, 2025.
