Our Story

1985-2017 It Was Always You💗

CHAPTER 1
Never in their wildest dreams, would Patti and David have imagined that by attending a friendly Redskins game together on November 18, 1985, would lead to their wedding day on May 13, 2017!
Betty and Blackie Simms deserve the credit for the invite and arranging that incredibly fun day, along with two of David's friends; Debbie Lovelace and Billy Wright. How ironic that because Patti's parents along with Brooks (EB) Wilson and Richard Turner could not use their seasons tickets for this game, that a very special relationship was in the making, among their friend's children.
While David was in "off season" from playing baseball with the San Francisco Giants and before Spring Camp started, Patti was also home for Thanksgiving and Winter Break from Virginia Commonwealth University. They each worked for extra play money at their family's businesses when they were in town, which was also convenient because Hornsby Tire & Service and Tidewater Safety Shoes were just a few blocks apart. A few lunches quickly led to nearly every night being a date, many of which Geni Lu was a part of. This was even more special because though they had just met, their parents had been friends for years.
CHAPTER 2
Sadly, the "breaks" were over and as David went back to his baseball career and Patti to college, they continued their long distance relationship by writing letters and weekly phone calls. *Yes, it's true, Kandy Hornsby that Patti kept her "David Box" full of cards, letters and pictures all these years!
Completely opposite schedules and different time zones made their relationship extremely difficult. Patti even spent a week in Clinton, Iowa during David's Ball Season and though it was priceless, it was also a sad reality check that their lives on separate coasts was paying a huge toll. It was heartbreaking, as this chapter in their lives was ending.
CHAPTER 3
When David's father, Bob became ill, he left Baseball and came back to work (eventually sharing ownership with his brother Mark) at Hornsby Tire. Patti had graduated and was traveling as a Flight Attendant until taking a Territory Sales Manager position with Philip Morris. They both went on with their lives, marrying and each having a boy and a girl, which is a "must" if you're ever to become a member of the Hornsby family.
Over the years, Patti's family always kept her updated on how David was doing and vice versa. There was only one time in 27 years did Patti and David actually run into each other. She was Hugely pregnant with Evan, shopping in a little store in Smithfield. As she tried to hide (unsuccessfully) behind a clothes rack, Patti heard her Mom, Elizabeth as loudly and friendly as always say, "Well hey there Daaaaviddd"!! It was a very short, "how have you been-kind of conversation" and off they went but not before getting to meet Dustin at just 7 years old.
The year 2010 hit them hard with each going through divorces. Although they'd been Facebook friends and randomly commented on live feed posts and that yearly, "Happy Birthday message", there had never been any type of reunion.
CHAPTER 4
Until.... one night when Patti (knowing about David's divorce) was talking to her long time dear friend, Debbie Walmsley and out of blue said, "I think I'm going to call David Hornsby and just see how his life is going". "Do It Patti, he was always my favorite in college!" she excitedly yelled through the phone line. After a glass of courage (Chardonnay) she went for it. Less than 5 minutes after leaving a message, David returned her call. A couple hours later, playing "catch up" led to nightly phones calls until the wee hours for an Entire Month! On March 17, 2012 (Evan's 13th Birthday) David finally made the trip to Richmond and that became their "second-first date". After 2 months and knowing they once again had something extra special, it was time to meet their children.
Tons of adventures, family time, travel- both up and down Interstate 64 as well as weekend get-aways, vacations out of the country, holidays, birthdays and celebrations, time quickly turned into a 2 Year Anniversary of being back together.
CHAPTER 5
David proposed (privately) on one of their most favorite trips, in Riviera Maya, Mexico on October 8, 2014 (Dustin's 25th Birthday) and without a doubt, Patti responded, "Absolutely, nothing would make me happier"!
Their busy life continued for the next couple of years for everyone. Makenzie has been away at Radford University and has moved from the dorm to two different apartments. Dustin graduated from Christopher Newport University, moved and took a job in Richmond. Alex has graduated from Lower to Middle School with lots of activities always going on. Evan began the whole College tour (across 3 states and 13 schools) and application process. David sold his home in Smithfield and moved permanently to Richmond. Yes, he drives back and forth to work daily, only once in a while taking a much needed break, staying and enjoying time with his precious Mom, Birdie. Just another reason why David is their Super Hero!
CHAPTER 6
Why choose The Hornsby House Inn and May 13, you ask? It was most important for Birdie to be at their special day, so Easy travel was a definate! David's family are cousins to three generations who lived there, and now manage the Inn. There is a whole wall of pictures dedicated to family weddings that have taken place in the house, and they will soon be proud to add theirs.
Even though their Honeymoon will have to wait until after Evan's graduation on May 27, there couldn't have been a more special date for Patti and her family. Elizabeth and Johnny Threatt were married on May 13, 1961 and this year would have been their 56th Anniversary💗
