What to Expect

First Time at a Catholic Wedding?

The Mass

We chose to have a Catholic mass for our wedding because we're both Catholic, and it's important to us to celebrate our marriage as part of the church's tradition. That means the ceremony will include the usual wedding stuff-- like vows and rings-- but also things like Bible readings, Communion, and prayers, kind if like a regular Sunday Mass.

If you've never been to a Catholic Mass before, here's a quick rundown of what to expect:

1. The ceremony will be in a Catholic church and led by a priest. We'll have readings from the Bible, a short message (called a homily), and traditional prayers.

2. We'll exchange vows and rings during the middle of the service-- this is the part where we officially get married!

3. Mass continues with Communion. If you are not Catholic or don't wish to receive Communion, that's totally okay-- you can stay seated or come up with arms crossed over your chest to receive a blessing.

4. There will be music, prayers, and some sitting, standing, and kneeling which is normal in a Catholic service. If you're not sure what to do, just follow along with everyone else! The priest is also very good about directing everyone throughout the service so don't stress! You are NOT required to kneel if you don't want to, just do what is comfortable for you.

5. The whole ceremony will last about an hour.

Most importantly, we're just so happy you'll be there to celebrate with us! Whether you're Catholic or not, your presence means a lot to us, and we want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable.

Commonly Asked Questions

1. What do I wear to a Catholic Wedding?

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in! Remember that we are getting married in a church so avoid shorts, tee shirts, crop tops, jeans, etc. If you're unsure, just reach out: We're not picky!

2. Can I receive Communion if I'm not Catholic?

No you cannot. You are welcome to receive a blessing during Communion by coming up with your arms crossed over your chest. You are also welcome to remain in your seat during this time.

3. Can I take pictures?

There will be a professional photographer capturing all the special moments, so you can relax and be present with us. This is a really sacred part of the day for us, and we'd love for everyone to focus on the ceremony without distractions.

After the Mass is over, feel free to take photos and celebrate with us!
