What to Wear to Our Wedding
Indian wedding clothing is completely optional! Our biggest priority is that you feel comfortable—especially for an outdoor wedding in Wisconsin in July. Whether that means a breezy summer outfit, cocktail attire, or something more traditional, wear whatever makes you feel good.
That said, if you’re excited about embracing this part of our celebration, we’d love that too! Below is a guide to help you explore different styles, colors, and shopping options.
Indian Wedding Clothing: Styles & Terms
If you’re new to Indian wedding fashion, here are some common styles to consider:
Lehenga – A three-piece outfit consisting of a blouse, a long skirt, and a dupatta (scarf or shawl). Great for twirling on the dance floor but could be heavier! Consider pinks, reds, greens, or purples for a festive look.
Saree – A long, unstitched fabric draped elegantly around the body. Stunning but requires some practice to move in—pre-pleated versions make dancing easier! Jewel tones work beautifully for evening events.
Punjabi Suit (Salwar Kameez) – A tunic paired with trousers and a dupatta. A comfortable, stylish choice that allows for easy movement. Again reds, oranges, pinks and yellows are especially fun for celebrations.
Sherwani – A formal embroidered long coat for men, often paired with fitted trousers. Looks regal in golds, maroons, or deep blues.
Colors to Consider
Indian weddings are all about bright, joyful colors!
Great choices: Pink, red, orange, yellow, green,—vibrant hues that reflect the celebratory spirit.
Colors to avoid:
Black – Considered inauspicious in some cultures.
