Aishah's family gave corsages and boutonnieres to Adnan's family when they arrived for the ceremony. Though it's a Pakistani tradition, the gesture of welcoming one family into the other is universally appreciated!

The traditional Muslim ceremony was held in the rotunda at the Pennsylvanian, just steps from the reception area. The couple made the space their own in several ways: They covered a custom-built stage in the same fabric used for the table linens, placed an oriental rug at the entrance to the ceremony space and brought in potted trees.

While the reception was flooded with mint and gold details matching Aishah's outfit, the couple wanted even more color. They chose peach roses and white orchids for the centerpieces. Adding texture to the room, some tables had tall arrangements and the others had a mix of tall and short arrangements with ivory candles.

In addition to traditional foods, custom-made linens (designed and bought in Pakistan!) brought the couple's culture to the table. Polka-dot gold runners added whimsy to the elaborate silk tablecloths. Beaded, gold chargers and gold bengaline napkins completed the look.

Reflecting the color scheme, the cake featured peach fondant flowers on each of the four tiers. Brown fondant bands wrapped around two of the layers. Inside, it was chocolate fudge cake.

In case the guests weren't all chocolate-lovers, petit fours with fresh fruit were served in addition to the fudgy cake.

A DJ played "First Day of My Life," by Bright Eyes, for the couple's first dance. For the rest of the night, he played traditional Indian and Pakistani love songs.

In keeping with culture, Aishah's mother made and gave out Bidh, a collection of dried dates, jordan almonds and other sweets.

Behind-the-scenes conspiring connected Aishah and Adnan. Aishah's aunt, a longtime friend of Adnan's mother, gave her niece's e-mail address to Adnan. The two exchanged a few messages, but Aishah thought Adnan wasn’t interested because he hadn't asked for her phone number. But it wasn't a coincidence -- Adnan heard Aishah was attending and planned to go so they could finally meet in person. When the two were introduced, sparks flew. "We talked about all of our plans for the future and knew then that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together," says Aishah. They got engaged just six weeks later.
