I wish I had the experience like I read here. But I did not and since my wedding in early 2020, I've been deciding whether or not to leave a review. In the end, I decided that if I... could prevent one other bride from having my experience it was worth it.
I visited Annika three or four times before purchasing my wedding dress. Each time I went in, I was told I needed to wait because they were running behind. Mind you, I felt very rushed throughout my appointments, almost like I was a hassle they needed to handle. Whenever I expressed concern about making a decision, the attendant quickly brushed it away and reminded me I was getting a deal if I choose right away.
In the end, I ordered the dress I came in envisioning - one of their long-time stock with alterations they said had been made before. I was assured two things - that the dress would come from the manufacturer with fewer layers of fabric to make the dress A-line (it was currently ballgown) and that the back of the dress would look the same just without a piece of fabric that went across the shoulders so it had a cleaner open back.
Everyone always warns about the dangers of altering a dress, but I was assured again and again by my Annika attendant it would exactly what I wanted. It wasn't.
When I got the dress, non of the fabric had been removed so it was a ballgown silhouette. When I pointed this out at my try-on in the store, one of the owners told me the attendant had been incorrect and that removing some of the underskirts is easily done, but I would need to have it done myself. We eventually worked it out that they would take it out before I took the dress home (they did not get this done and I picked up my dress with a check to pay to have someone else do it). I also noted that some of the seaming in the front of the dress was causing the fabric to stick out, causing my bust to look pointy. Finally, the back of the dress had basically been completely removed instead of just the strip of fabric at the top. Again, I was assured that changes could still be made when I scheduled a fitting.
I went with the recommended seamstress since their typical woman would be gone over the time of my wedding. I left that appointment in tears because their recommended seamstress informed me that none of the changes I wanted to make the dress look how I wanted it to look, and was assured would be easily done, were possible due to the construction of the dress. She also informed me that just to make the dress fit would be almost $1,000 - much higher than the $400-500 I was quoted at the store.
I contacted Annika telling them of the difficulty I was facing and they informed me that the seamstress must have been wrong and that I needed to bring the dress back in so they could see if the manufacturer had made a mistake. They reviewed and said that it wasn't a manufacturing mistake, but I must have misunderstood my attendant and the owner of the store. They also said they called the seamstress I went to and that I had lied about the quote I had received. I sent them a picture of the quote, but they still maintain that I am incorrect.
I ended up with three months before my wedding to find a new dress and complete alterations.
