I rarely write reviews but our daughter's wedding at Sparrow Valley Retreat exceeded all expectations!!! The couple had originally planned a wedding in Big Sur but two weeks before the big day we learned that the area was closed to nonresidents due to a road collapse. We were expecting 87 guests and changing the date wasn't an option. After a bit of scrambling, they were able to secure Sparrow Valley Retreat as the new venue and we all agree that it was spectacular!! Even though there was a steady rain that lasted into the early afternoon, the owners did everything possible to make sure that the wedding would go on as planned. I can't say enough about how hard Tania and Taylor worked to make sure that everything was set up on time and make this a dream wedding. Nestled in the redwoods of Nicene Marks State Park, it was indeed magical!!
truly a one of a kind place, we got engaged and had our wedding out at SVR and it was so magical. You won’t find another place like this, there is so much character and the atmosphere is so calming and it’s just truly breathtaking. the people you work with throughout the process become your friends. I am so grateful for Tania and to have come across this place. My best days were out at SVR and it will forever hold a special place in my heart. We will definitely be out to visit
For couples looking for a truly transcendent, intimate, destination experience - this is the venue for you. We had been searching high and low to find the place that reflected the story that we wanted to share with our guests - a magical night into the woods themed around good luck and fortune. We found Sparrow Valley on the third day on our third and final venue viewing trip to the area, and it was just simply magical. I instantly fell in love and immediately knew this was the place for us.
Driving up to the venue, nestled in redwoods on south end of Nisene Marks State Park, you feel like you're transported to a hidden, secret magical, redwood garden gem. The venue is off-grid, but supported by an awesome battery harvesting system they recently installed. Shuttle service is required, but that also makes it so fun for your guests! (And alleviates the possibility of those who shouldn't be driving themselves home after the party... if ya know what I mean)
The management and coordination staff are simply fantastic. They truly went above and beyond to make our kooky wedding vision come to fruition - all within our requested budget. The accommodations are glamourous and cozy - AND best of all, there's a sauna that overlooks the forest a soaking hot tub on the porch to rest and rejuvenate in all the splendor and newly wedded bliss.
From the moment we arrived, we felt so relaxed and enjoyed every minute of our wedding experience at Sparrow Valley. I hope we can always return to visit this very special, magical place.
We felt so fortunate to be able to celebrate our wedding in a site as beautiful as Sparrow Valley. The redwood grove is magical, the sun comes in just right. It’s an authentic space full of love, and everyone felt so connected to us when we did our vows. The cabin is top notch. It’s great to have extra days before and after, allowing us to soak in nature and give family and friends time to connect. Kids really enjoyed playing with the chickens, dogs, the archery set, and roaming around. We loved the quiet time we got for soaking in nature with the sauna, which has a wall of glass with just forest in sight. We often ended the night sitting around the hearth with the logs cracking. There were lots of little such moments.
The hosts worked intensely to get the space ready, and they were very responsive to our asks. It's an off grid property, and they do a lot to keep it running. There are genuine extra costs you cannot get around for anything bigger than the smallest micro-wedding, and you just have to plan that into your budget. It all worked out well, and we'd very much recommend Sparrow Valley.
Let me just say that my wedding at Sparrow Valley Retreat was incredible and we don't regret our decision to have it there. However I want to be honest that a lot of things worked out "in spite of" the owners and the venue, rather than "because of"...
Pros: the ceremony site is beautiful, and the property itself has a perfect overall aesthetic for someone wanting a small (<50 guests), more DIY, fully outdoor wedding; there are many INCREDIBLE vendors who have worked there and are familiar with the property and the owners, it's also nice that there's a mandatory 2 night stay so you don't feel rushed like you might at other venues churning out multiple weddings each weekend.
Cons: it is completely off grid (which was never actually disclosed to us until the day before our wedding when we showed up) meaning it is running off batteries and you better hope the power doesn't go out during your event (it did for us luckily after the event was over, about 1am), very little is included and you get the property itself "as is" - you need to bring in your own catering, rent all the dishes/supplies, etc and even bring in your own bathroom and hope the bathroom guy hooks you up with another generator. Note: many vendors do not want to deliver there considering it's way back on a rough road, or they charged us extra to do so; the property does NOT comfortably sleep 10 guests despite their flyer saying it does - it is a master bedroom upstairs with a closet off the bedroom that fits a tiny bed and there is a camper van outside that would comfortably sleep a couple, maybe a small child. The master bed was terribly uncomfortable, if that matters to you. The worst part of the venue however is the passive aggressive owners, who we did not enjoy working with. They treated us like we were inconveniencing them by asking for their dog poo to be cleaned up on the morning of our wedding or for asking for fans/AC to cool down the house which was over 90 degrees when we arrived. (Eg. owner said she was "too busy" to get us a fan and suggested someone from our wedding party do it instead) Not to mention all the pushback we received along the way about totally reasonable requests - like a functioning dinner table without 4 inch gaps between the slats. We also had vendors who felt disrespected. Luckily it all came together in the end, and we had a whole team of incredible people behind us who helped to create the perfect day. But for $15K we expected better attitudes from the owners.
I would 💯 recommend this venue for couples that want a unique and intimate wedding experience in the redwoods. It was the perfect size for our 50 guest wedding, and the cost included overnight stay on the property - which is convenient for the couple and saves money on vendor delivery/pickup. The property layout is intuitive and the surroundings and backdrop provide a great canvas for any variety of decor and design elements. Thie owners, Tania and Taylor, are so personable, friendly, and accommodating. And that’s just the start. They do an excellent job of maintaining the property and will respond promptly to any questions (literally - recology, outlets, sound system, etc.). They are open to feedback and quick to problem solve. There are also on site rentals for all those little time-bound things you may need. love how the property is always evolving, with creative projects to build community and enhance hospitality. It’s such an inspirational space. Almost all of our ideas on how to structure our wedding and what elements to feature were inspired by our first site visit. I could go on and on, but overall we are so glad we had our wedding at Sparrow Valley. Everything from the location to the layout and design and Tania/Taylor is magical :)
This venue is SPECTACULAR! Every detail, from the cozy interior to the gorgeous dinner table (hand-made by the owners!) and ceremony spot amongst the redwoods! Tania and her husband are amazing and were there with us every step of the way to make sure we had what we needed to make sure everything went off without a hitch (other than getting hitched ;))! I highly recommend this venue and your pictures are guaranteed to be GORGEOUS!
When I first found Sparrow Valley Retreat I was so excited. I love the open, airy feel it had to it. There's so much natural light and huge windows. I loved the style and aesthetic. Everything fit just right. They went above and beyond, and made so many things happen for our wedding day. The huge redwood slab table was gorgeous! It wasn't your typical wedding venue and I loved it so much.
When our original plans got cancelled due to Covid, I found this venue on Instagram and messaged the owner, Tania. She responded promptly and helped us pull our wedding together in about a month and a half. She went above and beyond to make us feel at ease and was available to answer all my questions. On the day of, she acted as the coordinator and handled everything from decor, contacting vendors to make sure they would arrive on time, and anything we needed! Her partner Taylor even built a shelter because in case it rained on our wedding day! Tania and Taylor are such kind people that have created a beautiful place that is welcoming, warm, and the perfect location to exchange vows. We can't wait to visit Sparrow Valley Retreat for our anniversary in the future. Oh and did I mention they are dog friendly?!
