rn Amy Houle (26 and a human resources director) and Steven Houle’s (28 and a financial planner) wedding was filled with love, laughter and plenty of personality. The pair gathered their family and friends in their home state for the springtime affair, planning an elegant, romantic day at the Wentworth by the Sea Country Club in Rye, New Hampshire. Breathtaking views of the sparkling blue Atlantic Ocean formed the backdrop for the couple’s sunny ceremony on the Wentworth’s expansive lawn, with bunches of fresh summery blooms like hydrangeas, peonies, roses and more adding a whimsical, romantic edge to the seaside spot. Pastel hues and gilded accents filled the Sperry sailcloth tent where the reception was held, with equestrian accents like miniature gilded horseshoe escort cards and horse-show ribbon table numbers introducing a note of playfulness to the classic decor. “I’m a horse lover and grew up riding horses, so I knew I wanted to include some horsey elements here and there,” Amy says. Other noteworthy details included a quilt square “guest book,” flower seed bomb favors and dozens of chic gold-lettered signs that served to narrate the day. The Wentworth by the Sea fueled the party with a decadent spread of Parmesan truffle fries, beef tenderloin and grilled salmon, while Nazzy Entertainment brought the house down with upbeat dance hits.

Jacques Pastries whipped up a decadent three-tier confection for the reception, topped with ivory Swiss-dot-specked fondant and delicate pastel sugar flowers. With so many delicious flavors to be had, Amy and Steven chose a different type of cake for each layer, ranging from marble with buttercream frosting, vanilla with chocolate ganache and chocolate with chocolate buttercream.

Charming equestrian details were woven throughout the day, giving the elegant, romantic affair a touch of playfulness and personality. “I’m a horse lover and grew up riding horses, so I knew I wanted to include some horsey elements here and there,” Amy says. When guests arrived to the reception, they found the way to their seats with miniature horseshoe escort cards dusted with shimmery gold glitter.
Favors that would be useful and long lasting were key to Amy and Steven. So instead of sending guests home with a few sweet treats, they gave their family and friends flower seed bombs from the Etsy shop BigRockWeddingFavors. The bombs contained seeds for Shasta daisies, zinnias, snapdragons and forget-me-nots. The pair placed the favors in small tulle sacs accented with hand-cut paper flowers, a fitting finishing touch.
The bridesmaid dresses had a romantic, ethereal look with a strapless, floor-length A-line silhouette and a cheerful pink hue. Amy selected Donna Morgan’s Stephanie dress for all the girls to wear, distinguishing her maid of honor from the rest with the designer’s Bailey gown in a warm shade of honeysuckle. “I knew I wanted the girls to wear long dresses for an elegant look and also for the temperature,” Amy says. “May in New Hampshire can be 40 degrees or 80 degrees.”

New Hampshire natives Amy and Steven knew that there was no place better to host their spring nuptials than their home state. Wentworth by the Sea Country Club in Rye, New Hampshire, offered a stunning backdrop for the day with its waterfront location and proximity to Portsmouth, a historic port city with an abundance of shops, restaurants and cobblestone streets. “We are both from New Hampshire and wanted to stay local, since the majority of our families are from here and the Northeast,” Amy says. “That way traveling wouldn’t be too difficult for them. We also love the ocean and playing golf together, so the Wentworth was perfect.”

Marie of Paisley Floral Design Studios created all the floral arrangements for the wedding, drawing on the summer season and the couple’s seaside-inspired palette for inspiration. Pops of brilliant blue in the form of hydrangeas dotted the tables, adding an element of vibrancy to the blush and gold tablescapes. Horse-show ribbons doubled as the table numbers and were displayed atop each arrangement, tying into the day’s equestrian motif.
Pre-Ceremony Summer Refreshments
To go with the wedding’s seaside elegance theme, a “princess dress” was a must for Amy. She visited Madeleine’s Daughter in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where she found an airy A-line Watters gown with a strapless embellished bodice and lightweight organza skirt. “I wanted a dress with some beading and a manageable skirt and train,” Amy says. “The Watters dress fit all my criteria. I originally didn’t want to try it on, but it was the perfect dress for me.”

Exchanging Vows at Wentworth by the Sea
The ceremony took place outdoors on the expansive lawn at Wentworth by the Sea in Rye, New Hampshire. With the sparkling waters of the Atlantic forming the backdrop, Amy and Steven kept the decor on the understated side, opting for a few summery bunches of blue and blush hydrangeas for the aisle and a striking, cascading arrangement of peonies, roses, hydrangeas and stock for the simple wedding arch.
