A Romantic Restaurant Wedding at Opia in New York, New York
Although Ron (53 and a garden designer) and Tonee (52 and a hair stylist) met in 2007, they would not get married until it was legalized in New York. When DOMA finally got struck down, they started planning their wedding at a budget-friendly venue, Opia, in New York City. With a classic black, white, and red color scheme, they decorated the restaurant to set the mood for romance with bright red balloons, an electric "Love" sign, and small red rose centerpieces. As most of their guests came from out of town, Ron and Tonee got classic "I Heart New York" mugs that they packaged in boxes with custom anchor monograms. Both grooms wore formal black tuxedos with long black ties and sparkly loafers. Instead of traditional boutonnieres, Tonee wore a spotted feathery pocket square, and Ron wore the same feather pinned to his lapel. Their attendants wore their own black cocktail dresses while carrying big red balloons instead of bouquets. Rather than a traditional seated dinner, Tonee and Ron treated their guests to catered finger foods, like quail eggs benedict and mushroom soup shooters. After lots of drinking and dancing, the couple cut into their tiered chocolate and chocolate-covered-strawberry wedding cake. The couple's favorite part of the wedding was a tradition from the oldest (and their favorite) gay bar in New Orleans--a napkin toss! They had 22,000 monogrammed napkins for their weddings, so when the chorus of "Love is in the Air" played, guests could toss their napkins in celebration. "It's pretty magical with a room full of your friends and family tossing 22,000 napkins in the air!" they say.
