As I’ve been busy not being allowed to make any decisions related to the wedding, David here to take a break on being supportive of Heather’s decisions and deliver on telling the tale of our love story and how I tricked Heather into marrying me.

Heather and I met in an emergency department in Austin, Texas while working as travel nurses. An Alabama boy falls in love with an Arizona girl isn’t exactly how I initially had it drafted up. Though we’d exchanged various conversations in passing, my first tangible memory with Heather was spent restraining a patient together. I might have let the adrenaline get the best of me, seeing that sliding a Sticky Note with my number on it didn’t actually scream “smooth and charming.” Whether the keys on her phone stopped working or she was simply playing hard to get, Heather took over a month to finally find that note and call me. We had our first date on July 4th and… you guessed it… there were FIREWORKS. Unfortunately, by the time Heather decided to take me up on my date offer, I’d simplified matters for our new, potential relationship by accepting a new travel job in Denver while she planned to stay in Austin full-time. I’ll never forget telling myself, “I like this girl, but should I really go out with her if I leave in a month?” Nevertheless, Heather’s patience met my persistence halfway.

After months of distance, all the Facetime calls of convincing (and likely the Texas heat) led Heather to do the only logical thing for our newfound relationship: to break her lease, quit her new job, and join me in Denver! Who knew that living in the same time zone was the best move we could have made?! Through the next few months of brewery dates, hiking adventures, and my favorite sweatshirts slowly disappearing from my closet, it became very real to me that Heather was something special. Before I knew it, a year together had already come and gone.

Following one final travel contract in New York City, we decided to move back to Denver full-time and become boring staff nurses. Believe it or not, the same girl who said, “Arizona girls aren’t meant to live in the snow,” became the driving force to move back to Colorado. From there, our furry friend, June’s introduction into the family meant I was trapped.

PAUSE: I would never say Heather is gullible or easy to mislead. I will say that her blindness to all the warning signs of the proposal made for the best surprise.
🚨 We get dressed up

Though there are no photos of the actual moment I asked Heather to marry me, I can honestly say that she didn’t believe me and was speechless to the point I chimed in to say, “Hurry up, my knee’s getting sore.” It was a special moment that, unfortunately, only I will remember because Heather’s memory blacked everything out the second I got on one knee.

Ultimately, I believe marrying Heather just might give me a shot at qualifying among “Heather’s Favorites,” potentially surpassing her loves of reading, puzzles, the Arizona Wildcats, sour beers, arcade basketball, and her Stanley cup.
