Our Story

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up." (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10a NIV)

Jason and Emily met (virtually!) on June 4, 2024 when they "matched" with one another on the dating app Hinge. This was Emily's first time on a dating app, so she was a little *app*rehensive . . . but thankfully, she matched with Jason the day after signing up for an account! Notoriously unable to resist a good science pun, she was instantly drawn to Jason's description of his current research: "I recently discovered that electrons can smile, even though they're negative!" She sent the "like" that morning, he responded that afternoon . . . and then - unbeknownst to both at the time - they started writing their story together!

The two immediately began texting and video-calling on a regular basis, and they met in-person for the first time while Jason was leading a math workshop at the Boston Public Library. Thanks to a teaching schedule that allows time for vacationing during the summer months, Emily began spending several weekends with Jason and his mom Kathy in New Hampshire. Emily's parents, Andre and Roxanne, visited New Hampshire in August to meet Jason and his family. Although Emily was not aware of it, all of these family members would be present for a very special event!

THE ENGAGEMENT

On August 10, Emily, Jason, Kathy, Andre, and Roxanne all went for a late afternoon hike to the top of Mt. Agassiz to enjoy stunning views of Franconia Notch. The weather was originally supposed to be cold and rainy, so all were delighted to find that the skies were clear and conditions were perfect for viewing the sunset in the distance.

Having packed a picnic basket for fortification, Jason passed around a bag of Reese's "Take 5" during a break in exploration. When Emily -- biologically unable to resist any offer of a chocolate peanut butter cup -- reached into the bag, Jason informed her that there was a "better one" near the bottom. To her very great surprise, something much lovelier than a confection waited for her in that bag!

Jason went down on one knee, ring in hand, and recited a lovely sonnet that he had written himself (featuring references from Emily's favorite poet, Robert Frost, and quotes from mutually favored books and movies!). No sooner had he finished this recitation than Emily responded with an enthusiastic "YES!", and everyone present -- including a trio of other hikers -- witnessed the beginning of yet another chapter in their story!
