Music is a big part of my and Jeremy’s life. While neither of us is super proficient in any instrument or singing, we love listening to music. When we first started dating, we used to go on long drives and listen to the radio. He took me to my first concert (Hella Mega Tour) and first musical at the Fox (Frozen), and since then we’ve been to several others. We went to the Renaissance festival, where we started to enjoy Irish and folk music. That led us to discovering the band the High Kings, and we went to their concert the night before he proposed.
Every year, I enjoy perfecting my Halloween playlist for the annual party I throw. There are rules I set on how long is appropriate for a song to be, what type of language is acceptable, if a song should even have words at all, etc. Most of it comes down to just intuition. You may think that a playlist is one of the simplest things to throw together, but it’s actually the first thing I start working on for my parties, normally in July or August, before I ever start planning the other details.
I consider music a muse. The lyrics and emotion craft concepts and build out character. That’s part of why I love musicals and Disney music, but the concept still applies to songs outside the genre. Music reflects the soul in ways mere words alone fail. Combinations of songs make story.
There’s no way I tell could our story without including some type of music.
The reception is a celebration of everyone in attendance, not just us. Not everyone likes the same type of songs that Jeremy and I do, so many of our favorites won’t be played. But I still want a chance to share them with you.
This playlist isn’t complete. I believe all playlists should be ever-evolving, growing like we do until one day their story ends. There will be updates to it through our wedding date, and possibly beyond, so feel free to check back in on it in the future.
I hope that maybe one of these songs can inspire you in some way, as they have for me.
