I still remember the first time I met Travis—it was one of those ordinary Tuesdays that somehow change everything.
I’d been working as the Optical Manager at our Walmart for a few years already, running from one side of the store to the other, making sure customers had their glasses orders sorted, dealing with shipments, paperwork—the usual chaos. Meanwhile, Travis was one of the newer hires up front. I’d seen him in passing, usually with a line of customers and that easy smile of his that seemed to make everyone’s day just a little better.
One afternoon, I stopped by the registers to pick up a few things for the optical department—cleaning wipes, snacks for the team, maybe some coffee I didn’t really need. Travis was on the till, chatting with the customer in front of me. When it was my turn, he scanned my items and then, without missing a beat, reached for a small bag of candy from beside the register.
“You look like you could use some sugar,” he said with a grin.
I laughed, half-surprised, half-flattered. “You trying to bribe management?”
“Only if it works,” he said.
That became our little inside joke. Every so often, when I passed by his lane, he’d hold up a piece of candy like a peace offering. Sometimes I’d take it; sometimes I’d just roll my eyes and smile. But it was enough to make even the busiest days feel lighter.
Over time, those brief moments turned into longer conversations—about everything from weekend plans to favorite movies to who brewed the worst coffee in the break room (we still disagree on that one). What started as friendly teasing grew into something deeper, something that neither of us had quite expected.
Looking back, it’s funny how something as small as a piece of candy could lead to something so sweet. But that’s how it started—just two Walmart employees, one smile, one candy, and a spark that hasn’t faded since.
