Our story began at the wedding of two very dear friends on a mountain in California. We were both far from home, me, a South Carolina girl, and Matthew, a Kansas-bred boy. We were excited to get to celebrate our friends that week, but we were also curious to meet each other. Before the wedding, my friend had teased that she wanted to set me up with one of her husband’s groomsman, and I was amused at the thought. Little did we know that one dance on a mountain would begin our story together.
In the next months, Matthew continued to pursue me over a long distance. During that time, we both were unsure of what our relationship would hold. I remember praying many times for discernment - knowing that Matthew was beginning to mean more to me, but also being nervous about what the future would bring. From the beginning, the Lord has been gracious to us. Throughout our two years of dating, He faithfully opened doors for Matthew and I to get to spend time together. Matthew was patient with me as I allowed him to become a larger part of my life. Slowly, our worlds became one. Eventually, Matthew took one final step into South Carolina. We were gifted with a summer together, and what a sweet summer it was! Our love for one another grew greater as we got to walk, both faithfully and literally, together in those warm days.
That fall, Matthew began graduate school at Duke University, and we entered another season of separation. And yet, we were encouraged. In our two years of dating, we had both learned and practiced pursuing the Lord in times of uncertainty. Although separation was not what we wanted, we knew it was only for a season. On October 12th, Matthew came to Anderson and led me on a scavenger hunt. We went to places throughout Anderson that served as reminders of the times we got to spend together throughout our years apart. And, finally, Matthew took me to one final garden, where he asked the question that would define the rest of our relationship. And yes, I did say yes!
Now, we are looking with eager anticipation towards this December. In December, we will enter separately down an aisle, but we will get to walk together away for the rest of our journey. And what joyous day it will be! We are so excited to get to ask our friends and family to be present with us as we worship and glorify the Lord in our union. May all glory and honor be to Christ who has brought us together and will continue to hold us together in the years ahead. We look forward to seeing you in December, and we hope you will be as excited as we are!
All glory be to Christ!
