Our Story

Where they met

Picture of Where they met

Mia and Esper met in their 7th grade English class. They can thank their teacher Mr. Sweeney for a friendship throughout high school and college, although they were not very impressed with each other as 12 year olds. They remained friends for their 6 years they spent together at Walnut Hills High School, even attending a school trip to Italy with their Latin class.

When it was time to leave for Ohio State, Esper wrote in Mia's year book "This year was super fun! I'm glad we got to hang out so much. We def have to hang this summer."

The beginning

Mia and Esper reconnected when she moved back to Cincinnati from Columbus to complete a Master's Degree in Physiology at UC. Esper was completing his 4th year of medical school at UC during the Summer of 2017. He reached out after seeing on Facebook her announcement she was moving back, suggesting that they meet for a drink.

They met at Taft's Ale House and talked for 2+ hours catching up on life events since high school and college. Mia left the bar wondering "Was that a date? It felt like one." The following day Esper suggested they go out to a movie together (Marvel's Spiderman: Homecoming) and offered to pick her up at her apartment. She felt that this was definitely date territory and agreed. Over the next several weeks, they sporadically spent time together as Esper was on a demanding rotation of medical school. She cooked dinner for him at her apartment. They saw another movie together. By the end of July that summer, they were officially dating.

The long distance years

After Esper graduated from UC, he moved to Louisville to start his residency training in pediatrics at Norton Children's Hospital.

Over the next 4 years, Mia and Esper would spend countless hours driving back and forth from Louisville and Cincinnati as she completed medical school and he completed residency and started his fellowship. They are intimately familiar with the 90 miles of highway that stretch between the two cities, they even have favorite exits (Exit 55).

In March of 2022, Mia matched into her combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency at the University of Louisville - there was light at the end of the long distance tunnel!

While they were physically separated, they still made time for family trips, friend's weddings, the all important date night which was usually dinner and a movie, and Bengals games.

The proposal

Picture of The proposal

Mia graduated from UC College of Medicine on May 1st, 2022. Little did she know, but Esper had planned to propose that night after the couple went out for a traditional dinner and a movie date night. They saw another Spiderman movie (No Way Home) and then ate dinner at a restaurant at Newport on the Levee.

After dinner, Esper suggested a walk across the Purple People Bridge. Mia was looking at the city skyline and when she turned around, Esper was down on one knee and asked her "Amelia Power, will you marry me?" She immediately said YES and a very kind passerby snapped a photo of the two of them.

Mia was completely surprised by the proposal as she had suspected he would propose during an upcoming two week trip to Italy. It was all in all a fantastic Elle Woods day. The couple celebrated with friends the next day at Madtree.

The happily ever after

Picture of The happily ever after

When they say their vows on September 14th, Mia and Esper will have known each other for 20 years. They have celebrated many milestones already - buying a house, living through a pandemic, friend's weddings, graduating from residency and fellowship and many others. In their spare time off from work, they enjoy spending time with friends exploring Louisville and are parents to two cats - Sheldon and Vin.

Mia and Esper are so excited for you to join them and celebrate their love on a (hopefully) gorgeous late summer evening this September.
