In 2019, Rick went to work at Ligonier Camp, where he then felt called to pursue a career in ministry.
In 2020, Elizabeth worked at Ligonier Camp during the pandemic, where she prepared for a future in education.
In 2021, Rick and Elizabeth both returned to work at camp as the camp program directors.
As summer concluded, Rick and Elizabeth went to Ohiopyle as their first date.
A couple of weeks later, after a coffee date in Ligonier, Rick and Elizabeth were going for a walk when a kind elderly man stopped them to ask them about their story. When they told him that they were not dating yet, the kind man asked them, "What are you waiting for...you can stand on the dock all you want and look at the boat, but eventually you just have to jump on!"
In early September, Rick and Liz jumped onto the boat and began dating!
Rick pursued ministry by earning a degree at Grove City College while Elizabeth pursued math education at Allegheny College - one hour north. They visited each other almost every weekend, filling their time with Bananagrams, hikes, lacrosse games, ping-pong, and Ben & Jerry's ice cream. One of their favorite memories was a Halloween party they dressed as "Liz-terine and her Coolgate."
Despite only being an hour apart, Rick and Elizabeth detested the miles that separated them Monday through Friday. However, with each day, God affirmed their relationship more and more, proving that distance wouldn't get in the way of His plan.
As senior year came to a close, Rick and Elizabeth turned their senior papers in on the same day and later celebrated graduation together!
Rick and Elizabeth each grew up in the church and are excited to begin a married life together in Christ. While they were dating, God called them each individually to ministry while also calling them to doing ministry together. Their relationship began at Ligonier Camp and continued as they worked at Elfinwild Church together for the following two summers. Sometimes ministry took them to hard conversations and fatigue, while it also brought them joy, memories, and funny costumes. Ultimately, ministry brought them closer together as they learned what it meant to serve the Lord as a couple and prepare to serve Him as husband and wife.
On December 27, 2023, Rick took Elizabeth back to their first date location, Ohiopyle, where he popped the question along the river's edge. The pouring rain couldn't dampen the spirits that day as friends and family gathered to celebrate with the joyful couple.
The mountain laurels that surrounded them that day will forever be special, as Rick had laurel leaves engraved in the ring. These leaves not only represent where Rick and Elizabeth became engaged, but they also represent Ligonier Camp, which is located in the Laurel Mountains.
After the big day, Rick and Elizabeth plan to live in the Pittsburgh area, pursuing the call God has given each of them individually, while also pursuing their new calling as husband and wife. They want to have a dog and eventually some goats! If you stop in to visit them, you can expect to be served tacos, given tea in your favorite mug, and beaten in a board game or two.
