At the time, Whitney was working for the Athletic Marketing Department at Utah Valley University where she went to sporting events, captured video, and created short highlights to use for social media and other advertising mediums. And Jake had just transferred to Utah Valley from El Camino Junior College to play baseball. He had only been in Utah for about a couple months.

On September 8th 2017, Jake went with his baseball buddies to the women's soccer game where Whitney was shooting some video. At the start of the game, Whitney decided to head over to where the baseball team was hanging out to shoot some video. Some may say she picked that spot for a reason. While she was talking to a guy she knew on the team, he introduced her to a handsome teammate with a great smile. He asked for an introduction and sparked up a conversation with her even helping her get some promo footage of the baseball team (whatever it takes to keep the convo going, right?).
