Mehendi & Sangeet

Hotel Shangri-La, Kathmandu

The Mehendi Ceremony will kick off the wedding festivities and will allow our friends and families to get to know each other. We will be hosting this in the Shangri-La garden. There will be multiple henna artists ready to apply beautiful henna designs.&nbsp;&nbsp;









The day festivities will be followed by the Sangeet and dinner at night. The Sangeet will be a chance for everyone to show off and learn some dance moves. This will be a small, casual event.&nbsp;Choreographed performances will be on the following night.&nbsp;&nbsp;









Attire:









Mehendi:&nbsp;Casual traditional attire such as&nbsp;Salwar kameez or a simple lehenga for women. Men&nbsp;can either wear casual clothing for this event or a traditional&nbsp;kurta.&nbsp;If you wish to have henna applied on your hands, consider wearing shorter sleeved shirts.

Sangeet:&nbsp; You can change between the two events if you wish. Please wear something warmer for the Sangeet as it will be colder&nbsp;during the night. Wear something comfortable that you can dance in!

Nagpur Reception (for guests in India only)

This reception&nbsp;will be held in Nagpur, India, for our wedding guests who will not be able to attend the festivities in Nepal.

Description of Ceremonies

Mehendi

The Mehndi Ceremony is generally held &nbsp;the day before the&nbsp;wedding and is an Indian tradition, celebrated in a variety of ways across the country. Although not a part of a traditional Nepali wedding, this has been widely adopted throughout Nepal.&nbsp;This event is primarily for women from both sides to apply mehndi to their hands and feet. Mehndi, otherwise known as henna, is a paste associated with positive spirits and good luck.&nbsp;Mehndi has a lot of&nbsp;natural medicinal herbal remedies, which is known to&nbsp;cool&nbsp;the body and relieve&nbsp;any stress. It is applied to both the hands and feet in order to cool the nerve-endings of the body and prevent any tensions before the wedding.&nbsp;

Sangeet

Sangeet is&nbsp;typically hosted by the bride's family after the Mehndi but&nbsp;prior to the wedding. It is a chance for both families to meet and enjoy a night full of dancing. The word Sangeet translates to ‘sung together’ from Sanskrit. Traditionally celebrated in the Punjab regions of India, this ceremony has been adopted by many other regions as a form of celebration for the wedding to come.&nbsp;

Supari Giving Ceremony (Gwen Bigu)

In Newari culture, Supari giving is a simple ceremony which signifies the wedding being accepted by both families. The groom's family has to send 12 pieces of adorned Supari (Beetlenut) along with Sahit paper, which is a&nbsp;paper that has the auspicious date &&nbsp;time for the Swayambhar (the wedding), set of clothes, jewelry, sindoor, fruits and sweets as a gift to the bride.&nbsp;

Janti

Janti is the groom's procession and is the groom's grand entrance to the wedding site (typically the bride's house).&nbsp;The groom and his friends and family make a loud and cheerful&nbsp;entrance&nbsp;at the location, typically with a decorated car, which the groom will be riding, a&nbsp;musical band, and a lot of dancing.&nbsp;They will be welcomed by the bride's side prior to the wedding ceremony.

Swayambhar

The Swayambhar is the main wedding ceremony and will begin&nbsp;at the auspcious time given in the Sahit paper, sent by the groom's family. This ceremony&nbsp;will include traditions followed in&nbsp;both the Newari and Marathi cultures.&nbsp;We will be declared husband and wife at the conclusion of the Swayambhar.&nbsp;

Kanyadaan

The Kanyadaan is the official giving away of the bride by her parents. After the bride accepts the marriage in the Swayambhar, the bride's parents give their daughter away through a variety of rituals. Following this, the bride's family will wish her farewell before she leaves with the groom and his family.&nbsp;

Mukh Herne &&nbsp;Jwai Bhitraune

These events will not take place on the wedding day but we are including this as information only.&nbsp;These&nbsp;typically take place following the wedding and the reception, and is only attended by a small group of close&nbsp;family.&nbsp;

Mukh herne (translated "looking at face") is the bride's family checking on the bride at the groom's house to make sure she is being kept well by her new family.&nbsp;

Jwai Bhitraune (translated "receiving son-in-law") is the bride's family inviting and welcoming their newest son in law to their home.&nbsp;

Day Trips In & Around Kathmandu

THAMEL

A short distance from the hotels, you will find a lot of shops, restaurants and bars in the narrow streets of Thamel. There are many markets that sell&nbsp;metal handicrafts, colorful jewelry and other souvenirs from Nepal.&nbsp;&nbsp;

DURBAR SQUARES (BHAKTAPUR, KATHMANDU & PATAN)

Durbar squares are areas located is front of palaces and there are three famous ones&nbsp;in and around Kathmandu. All three&nbsp;Durbar squares are UNESCO&nbsp;World Heritage Sites and&nbsp;consist&nbsp;of traditional art and architecture in the form of&nbsp;temples, idols, open courts, water fountains and more. Before the unification of Nepal, Nepal consisted of small kingdoms, and Durbar Squares are the&nbsp;most prominent remnants of those old kingdoms in Nepal.&nbsp;

Everest Experience Mountain Flight

Take a one hour flight from Kathmandu to get the most beautiful panoramic view of the Himalayas, including an up close view of Mount Everest. The most popular flight is the early morning flight on Buddha Air and you can find more information&nbsp;<a href="https://www.buddhaair.com/mountain-flights/mount-everest-sightseeing-flight" target="_blank">here</a>.

Swayambhunath Stupa

Swayambhunath is an ancient religious architecture atop a hill in the&nbsp;Kathmandu Valley. The complex consists of a&nbsp;stupa, a variety of shrines and temples, a&nbsp;Tibetan&nbsp;monastery, museum and library.&nbsp;Swayambhunath stupa is also called the `Monkey Temple' because of the many hundreds of monkeys who scamper about the temple at night.&nbsp;According to legend, the entire valley was once filled with an enormous lake, out of which grew a lotus. Swayambhu is believed to have been born out of the lotus.

This is an excellent place to get panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley.

Hiking around Kathmandu

Surrounded by hills and mountains, there is no shortage of hiking trails in and around Kathmandu Valley. Overnight Trips

NAGARKOT

Nagarkot has a reputation as the top spot for enjoying Himalayan views. This trip can be done in one day. However,&nbsp;to view the mountain ranges in sunrise or sunset, it is recommended to stay overnight. Nagarkot also offers some excellent hiking options.&nbsp;

DHULIKHEL

Dhulikhel is a similar trip as Nagarkot, however the roads are a little better to traverse.&nbsp;Similar to Nagarkot, this trip will take 1 full day. To view sunrise, it is recommended to stay in a hotel / resort for the night.

The Last Resort

A beautiful three-hour ride from Kathmandu, <a href="https://www.thelastresort.com.np/" target="_blank">The Last Resort</a> is located on top of a river gorge close to the Tibetan border. The resort offers a variety of activities such as bungy jumping over a 160m high tropical gorge, canyon swing and&nbsp;tandem swing.

The accommodations at this resort are in luxury safari tents.&nbsp;If you plan on booking this trip, keep in mind that it can get pretty cold during the mornings and nights during December.&nbsp;

Multiple Day Trips

CHITWAN

Chitwan National Park, a World Heritage Site,&nbsp;is the first national park in Nepal. It is located in the foothills of the Himalayas and home to rare mammals such as the one-horned rhino and Bengal tigers.

POKHARA

Pokhara is&nbsp;well-known as a starting point&nbsp;for various&nbsp;<a href="http://www.welcomenepal.com/places-to-see/annapurna.html" target="_blank">trekking trail and expeditions in the Annapurna</a>. There is plenty to do in the city that is considered the tourism capital of the country. A&nbsp;short hike to Sarangkot is highly recommended, with magnificent views&nbsp;of astounding&nbsp;sunsets, sunrise, and of the whole city beneath.&nbsp;Other activities include boating along the Phewa lake, paragliding, zip lining&nbsp;or simply relaxing at the lake with beautiful views of the Annapurna range.

Kathmandu Marriott Hotel

Tribhuvan International Airport is the only&nbsp;international airport in Kathmandu.&nbsp;

It is around a 20 minute drive to Marriott. We have arranged with&nbsp;Marriott to offer airport shuttles from the airport to the hotel on the 17th and 21st. If you would like a shuttle on a different date, this can be arranged by calling the hotel prior to arrival.&nbsp;There are also plenty of taxis available upon arrival at the airport if you are arriving on a different date.





There will be transportation provided to and from the&nbsp;hotel&nbsp;to Shangri-La for the events.&nbsp;
