In the golden days of late October 2023, a simple photo sparked a love story that neither Abbey nor Sam could have predicted. Abbey had just stepped into a new chapter of her life—hopeful, healing, and open to what the future might hold. She was just about to leave for a trip to Texas, when she was getting her nails done by Sams Stepmom, Thuy. Abbey's mom helped Thuy in matchmaking the two, since Abbey was very reluctant to connect with someone new. She sent the photo to Sam with a gentle suggestion: “You should reach out to her.” Sam had never followed through on Thuy’s matchmaking ideas before. But this time, something was different. Abbey’s smile, her presence in that single photo—it stayed with him. On October 25th, he took a leap of faith and messaged her. He told Abbey how beautiful she was, and that he had been single for years—but something about her felt worth exploring. Abbey, though not planning to reach out herself, had told herself she’d be open if Sam did. And now, here he was. The very next day, October 26th, Sam mentioned he had a mini goldendoodle named Kiba. Abbey’s heart lit up. She had always dreamed of having a doodle, and now here was this kind, thoughtful man—with the exact dog she’d always wanted. It felt like fate. Their first date was simple and sweet: a walk with Kiba, laughter echoing through the crisp fall air, and conversations that flowed like they’d known each other forever. Kiba, of course, was the star of the show—and quickly became the center of their little world. From that day on, their connection only deepened. Movie nights, game nights, cozy dinners, and family gatherings filled their days. On November 21st, Sam asked Abbey to be his girlfriend, and she said yes with a full heart. Together, they built a love rooted in faith and friendship. They prayed together, studied the Bible, and found joy in worship. They spent time with each other’s families, traveled from state to state, and became each other’s best friend. Their love was easy, intentional, and full of laughter. But their story also carried a deeper thread—one woven with memory and meaning. Sam’s younger brother, Carter Boerboom, had passed away at just 14 after a courageous battle with cancer. Abbey had the honor of meeting Carter through his sister Katie, and his passing had a lasting imprint on Abbey's heart and faith journey. Together, Abbey and Sam believe that Carter is in Heaven, smiling down on them—his matchmaking skills clearly at work. They carry Carter in their hearts, feeling his presence in the quiet moments and the joyful ones. He is part of their love story, their faith, and their future. Now, Abbey and Sam are preparing for a life together in Marshall, Minnesota—grateful for their roots, but always ready to explore the world hand in hand. With Kiba by their side, close family, amazing friends, and Carter watching over them, they are building a life full of love, laughter, and purpose.
