Skip the hike and visit Lake Hollywood Park for your picture. The park is anticlimactic, but if you want your picture with the sign this is the quickest way to get it.

For an interesting hike walk around the old Los Angeles Zoo and check out the studio apartments for only $1450 per month. There is no running water, but at that price its a steal.
After you can head next door over to the new zoo, let me know how that one is, I haven't been.
This bowling alley opened in 1927 and they have done an incredible job of keeping the 20s feel alive, minus the fact that there is a bar that serves alcohol.
We highly recommend that you look into getting reservations to bowl, but its definitely a site to see regardless.

About 1 hour north along the Pacific Coast Hwy this cute coastal city is well worth the visit. With Spanish architecture planned out to a T this city has an incredible downtown with restaurants, shops, and wineries, as well as a pier.
