Q + A

What colors should I avoid wearing to the Sangeet?

The bride, groom, and immediate family will be wearing shades of green, cream, white, and gold. Please refrain from wearing clothing of these colors.

What is Mehndi?

Mehndi is a pre-wedding celebration in Hindu culture; during this event, the bride has a red-orange mehndi applied to her palms, the back of her hands, and her feet in intricate designs. Friends and family also participate in getting Mehndi applied on them if they want. Please wear sleeveless and loose fitting clothing if you are planning to participate.

What is Haldi?

The ceremony signifies an auspicious start for the bride and groom where it purifies their heart and soul before entering into holy matrimony. It is celebrated on the wedding day or one day prior to the wedding day and is usually a close-knitted event. The closest family, relatives and friends come together on this auspicious occasion to apply turmeric paste (haldi) on the bride and groom's face and arms. The tumeric paste is believed to be good for the skin promoting a healthy glow and shine for the bride and groom.

Sangeet

This event is a big party consisting of choreographed dances from the bride and grooms friends and family, lots of dancing, food and drinks.

I want to wear traditional Indian attire, but I don't know where to start!

There is no expectation for you to wear Indian clothes to our wedding. If you are not comfortable wearing traditional Indian clothes, any cocktail dress or ensemble that you would wear to a Western wedding is suitable. However if you are interested in wearing Indian attire, we’re here to help! Chaniya Cholis and sarees are the most common options for women. A Chaniya Choli is a two-piece outfit that includes a top (usually cropped) with a full, high-waisted skirt. A saree is a long piece of fabric, often made of silk, that's used to wrap around the body. Men are encouraged to wear a sherwani (which is a long coat-like top) or a kurta.

Haldi and Mehndi Attire

For the haldi and mehndi: opt for light weighted traditional outfits because there is a good possibility of staining the outfit with haldi (turmeric) or henna. Men could pick kurtas and women could choose from Chaniya Cholis, pant sets, or sarees.

Sangeet Attire

This event is the most formal of the Indian events. Women can opt for cape and skirt sets, pre-draped sharara sarees, embroidered saree gowns, Chaniya Cholis or sequinned sarees to stand out. Men can wear a kurta, sherwani, or suit set.
