It was the Fall of 2014. Abby was a Sophomore at the University of Michigan, and Austin was a Freshman. Over the weekend, Abby received an email from her Political Science professor stating that she had been moved into a new lecture. That Tuesday, on her first day in the new section, Abby overslept her alarm and walked in a few minutes late. While there were only a few open seats left, she noticed someone giving a little wave and gesturing to the seat next to him, so she went. That "someone" happened to be Austin. They talked quietly throughout class, and he asked for her number. After class, she offered him a ride to his dorm--he said he was "okay". The next time the class met, he asked if the offer still stood. The rest, is history.
With it being graduation weekend at Michigan, Abby was focused on the upcoming ceremonies and family coming into town. Her first ceremony was on Thursday, April 27th. Abby noticed Austin walked in late, but what she didn't know was that he was late because he was picking out a ring at Schlanderer & Son's. As fate would have it (and as Abby and Austin later learned), both Stephen Hatch and Scott Cole purchased engagement rings at the same jeweler over 25 years ago.
The following day, during Michigan's Student-Athlete commencement, Austin's plan began to unfold. Before the ceremony began, Austin pulled Abby's dad aside to ask for his blessing. Austin had also included Abby's volleyball coaches (Mark and Leisa Rosen) in his surprise. After the ceremony, her coaches asked Abby to stop by Cliff Keen Arena to receive a special gift.
When Abby walked into Cliff Keen, she saw Austin standing alone on the volleyball court. Once she realized what was going on, she got emotional. Austin held onto her hands and said, "I love you Abigail. The past two and a half years have been absolutely incredible, and I want to spend forever with you. You're the best teammate I've ever had, and I want to be teammates for life." Then he got down on one knee and asked, "Will you marry me?"
