It all started watching horses race Churchill Downs while we sipped Mint Juleps. The easy conversation and deep laughs led to camping stories, gear comparisons, and many out-of-door, out-of-box adventure plans. Hard to lose those smiles.
A shared love of water and the sun soon brought the acquisition of a second kayak. A deep current began its course.
And of course there’s Jax. Abra’s closest friend. Her baby. Her guardian. It turns out that Drew ‘speaks’ Jax. Thus, the ultimate test was passed.
The capsizing of said kayak in deep lake chop with a Labrador leashed to the bow will teach team problem solving.
Sleeping in a tent in 100 degree Arkansas heat within the first month together is a great indicator of compatibility.
Agreeing on how a fire should be built and then gazing into it and poking at it. Together. That beats all.
Falling from hammocks together. Digging up garden beds and eating vegetables we grew with muddy hands.
The ‘Chicken Experiment’
Moon dancings. Palo Santo smudgings. Spontaneous day trippings.
Breathing the good air. Out for each other. Laughing all the while. Going with the flow.
Soaking in a cedar bath on a pitch black Ozark hillside pulsing vividly with thousands of luciérnagas, to piñon tinged mountain air of Ojo Caliente hot springs under the crystalline celestial sky, a sacred moonrise above the muddy banks of the Kaw, and the ancient Pacific blue of Banderas Bay’s unending surf.
Water is our union.
And now we ride the waves of life together. Always with the ebb and flow, through the troughs and crests, high tide and low.
