Our Story

The culmination of a 40+ year journey will be taking place on August 25th, 2024. You may read that and say “40 years”??? Let me start at the beginning. We would first cross paths at a regular haunt in East County San Diego called The Navajo Inn. I, at the time, was frequently playing there in my band Red Alert. When I first saw Judi walk in the club, she looked like she had just walked out of an MTV music video; hair teased, tight jeans, leopard print shirt and jacket and eyes that would turn you to goo faster than Medusa could turn you to stone. It was all over for me! She would stand near the stage watching me play while I would manage to hit every wrong note I could find while being completely distracted. We would get to know each other over the next 2 or 3 months, regularly having breakfast at a local Denny’s after the gigs, and having a little smooch time in the parking lot before going our separate ways (I hear a song there somewhere). One night, after a gig and a Denny’s breakfast, I went in for the evening closing kiss and was met with ‘the hand’. She proceeded to tell me that she had met someone that she was really interested in and we would have to stop seeing each other. I was devastated! And even worse, she waited until AFTER I bought breakfast!!! Everything happens for a reason. It wasn’t our time. Judi was happily married to Wolfgang Hopka for over 30 years and raised an amazing son, Ryan. Over the years, I would occasionally run into her while out and about and we would catch up. Unfortunately, Judi lost Wolfgang in 2016, way too early. Knowing him myself from our early days of playing Navajo Inn, I reached out to Judi via text to send her my condolences. About 6 months later, I get a text response back asking if it was the same Adam. She explained how she never got the message until she got a new phone and started receiving all these old messages that were sent. We started texting and catching up on the last 30+ years. On a visit to San Diego to see my Mom, we met up at our old haunt, now called Navajo Live. The date was May 27, 2016. I tried playing it cool but she would always look and catch me staring at her. We met the following evening at the House of Blues to see a mutual friend that was play there that evening. After going back to Nevada, we continued to text and learn more about each other at this point in our lives. We both knew where it was all headed but it was clear that Judi was not ready to make that kind of commitment, and I was OK with that. I would wait as long as it would take. We even agreed that she would make the first move when she was ready. LOL Then life changed. After finding out my mom had cancer, I took leave from work and came back to San Diego to take care of her. It is said that relationships grow stronger through life’s trials and this one was no exception. We were clearly both on the same page about how our relationship was growing but clearly unsure of the timing. She’s still grieving the loss of her husband and I am trying to care for my mom while having to face the reality of her fate. We were ultimately there for each other as we both dealt with our losses. We were each other’s rock. After my mom passed, Judi helped me get the house squared away while I made plans to head back to Nevada. I have no idea what I would have done without her help. It didn’t help that I was totally smitten with her in the process!! Now that I had the family home, I made the decision to moved back to San Diego. I spent the next 3 months between San Diego and Nevada preparing for the move. On one of the trips back to San Diego, I figuring we could both use a day out, I took her for a day out in Balboa Park. We hit a few museums, saw an IMAX film and had a great lunch. We were walking back to the car when she told me to stand next to a tree and close my eyes. I was thinking “what is up her sleeve”? So I did. After a few moments, I felt her lips touch mine. The rest of the world disappeared. That was July 17, 2017. The move had been made. Life changed again, this time in the best way. We spent 3 years in San Diego building our life together before making the decision to move to the Austin area. It was the best move ever. We had now found ‘our’ new home together. On August 25th, 2024, this 40+ year journey will be complete. We will finally be able to continue our journey as husband and wife. What new adventures lie ahead? I can only imagine!

The ceremony will be followed by a reception at the same location, offering a seamless transition from the formalities of the vows to an evening of celebration. In respect of the couple's values and to ensure a family-friendly environment, the event will be alcohol-free. However, a delightful champagne toast will be included to honor and celebrate the newlyweds.
