Our Wedding

Justin Pierce Baldwin is to be credited with introducing us. Two native New Yorkers, Justin and Keith met while working at Banana Republic together between summers in college and have been have been close friends ever since. Justin and Alana met when she lived in NYC years back and have maintained a valued friendship ever since.

Background

In February 2022 Justin asked Alana if she had time to show Keith around a bit while he was in Seattle for a business trip. Justin said we’d actually met years ago at one of his many fabulous social gatherings, and the man has a memory like a vault, so apparently we did. The timing back then was not yet right though. Justin insists he wasn’t trying to set us up. But alas - over happy hour at Toulouse Petit, we had an incredible night where we quickly realized we had a lot in common. In hindsight, Toulouse Petit is a romantic location. At the time though, it was just one of the best places to get happy hour in the city (still is).

Over Creole Cuisine

As we left Toulouse Petit, it began snowing and actually sticking, uncommon in Seattle. As planned, we went up to see the view from Kerry Park as part of seeing the city, now in the snow. The entire night was incredibly, surreptitiously, serendipitously, romantic, something we didn’t acknowledge to each other until later. Now it all feels like kismet. We met again the next evening with friends of Keith’s to get drinks and talked more. It was very clear we got along well and had shared values and a shared sense of humor.

It Was a Snowy Night 

After Keith left Seattle we talked most nights for hours by phone, continuing to only find more and more in common and complete ease in talking with each other. Life gets so busy, it’s hard to now imagine having time to talk for hours by phone. And yet, the time flew by as things often do when you’re enjoying yourself.

Long Distance 

Keith was planning to move to Seattle in late 2022 so that we could start our life together. He then moved his plans up a bit sooner and moved in October 2022 because of the best surprise ever, our daughter Illa Rose.

Big Plans 

We are so grateful that we found each other, and in awe of how full life can be so suddenly, with so much to celebrate. Alana would like to play “Bless The Broken Road” at the wedding. Keith isn’t so into country music… TBD.

Happy 

We had the privilege to be legally married by the Honorable Anita Crawford-Willis in a small ceremony, followed by a lovely reception, in December 2023. We have been looking forward to also having a larger ceremony and reception to commemorate our union in the context of Judiasm under a chuppah and celebrate with the full circle of our friends and family. We are so happy and honored to share in this special day together. Thank you for joining us, from near and far. Travel

Near Venue and Hotels

Great trail for walking and biking. Runs from Seattle up through Bothell and Kenmore (where it runs along Lake Washington), ending in Woodinville. Easy to do just a section of the trail and turn around, with nice parks for lunch along the way. Bike rental option (website): Bothell Bike and Ski. Approx $40/day. Burke Gilman Trail

Woodinville has long been associated with Chateau St. Michelle and the growing list of wine tasting rooms. Note, most tasting rooms charge a fee for a flight or tasting (around $20+) so despite the proximity of the many tasting rooms it can get pricey to try them all. A couple is usually plenty anyways though to make a fun day of wine tasting. Maryhill Tasting Room is a large location/a great place to start. There are a few options to do this around Lake Washington, Lake Union and on the Puget Sound. The closest option near the wedding venue/selected hotels is likely with Whats Sup leaving from Log Boom Park on Lake Washington (website attached). Located at: 17415 61st Ave NE, Kenmore, WA 98028 Local tip: it is safe to swim but important to shower once home/at the hotel after swimming in Green Lake or Lake Washington If you want to see some houseboats, heading to Seattle and taking out a boat from Agua Verde Paddle Club or the University of Washington Boat House are your best options. Agua Verde or Ivars Salmon House are highly recommended for lunch (and/or happy hour at Ivars). At either you can paddle up to the restaurant and enter from the dock. If you want to venture to the sea and maybe see some sea lions, otters, seals or sometimes even an orca, Alki Kayak Tours (rental available sans tour) is a best bet. Marination Mai Kai, right next door, is highly recommended for lunch, happy hour and/or sunset (gorgeous, on the patio overlooking Alki beach and the Seattle skyline).

Paddle Boarding and Kayaking

One of Alana’s favorite spots from when she lived north of Seattle. A pretty and relatively easy walk through the woods on trails and steps to get to the beach (approximately 1.2 miles each way). There’s a free parking lot available, though on busy days that can fill up, requiring you to find street parking nearby. Located at: 8020 NE Bothell Way Kenmore, Washington 98028

Newly created aquarium wing, with tropical shark tank “scheduled to open in 2024.” Whether that is open in time or not, it is a fabulous aquarium. Learn about local marine life and preservation. Fun tidal tank for kids. Educational programs throughout the day, check website for details. Walk the waterfront, where to can take an Argosy Cruise tour, go to the Olympic Sculpture park and get some souvenirs at the gift shops. Bumbershoot is held every year at Seattle Center on Labor Day Weekend. They often bring some big names; a fun time if you’re interested. Parking is a nightmare, park in another neighborhood and take public transport or plan to pay for parking $$. Double check if other options like the Children’s Museum, Pacific Science Center (and IMAX), Chihuly Glass Museum and MoPOP (formerly Experience Music Project) are open for regular admittance. Space Needle and the Monorail should be open without entry to the festival, though likely busier than usual.

Seattle Center (Bumbershoot Festival, Space Needle and more)

If you can only do one tourist attraction, make it this. Learn the raunchy and often ludicrous history of Seattle in the 1800s and beyond. Other outfits have opened in recent years. Bill Speidel’s is the original and the one we recommend. Fun, interesting, been running for years and always a classic. Worth seeing if you’ve never been. Fun to go to again even if you’ve been before. If you’re downtown, it’s a great place to grab lunch in the sun on the back deck (or at one of the many restaurants) and peruse unique handcrafted souvenirs. From the website: The Pike Place Market has been a defining Seattle icon for more than a century. Considered by many “the soul of Seattle,” the Market spans nine historic acres in the center of downtown where everyday locals and tourists alike shop, visit, eat and discover. Founded in 1907, the Market is one of the oldest and largest continuously operating public markets in the United States and is brought to life by the hundreds of farmers, crafters, small businesses, and residents that call it “home”.

Pike Place Market

Take a Washington State Ferry if you never have before. You can drive or walk on from the newly renovated downtown ferry terminal. Bainbridge Island is great because you can easily walk around town upon arrival without a car. In town there are lovely museums, restaurants and shops to explore. An easy day trip from downtown Seattle. Alternatively, closer to the hotels there is a ferry option from Edmonds (listed below under “Around Town”. Note: a car is necessary to get around on that route). Look up schedules in advance at WSDOT.com/ferries. Reservations recommended at busy times (holidays/weekend/rush hour) though not needed for walk-on. There is not parking at the terminal. If you plan to walk on, use public transport to get to downtown Seattle or seek out street parking or a garage near the terminal. If you bring a car you can explore the area more, including the Key Peninsula (connected by bridge to Bainbridge).

Gorgeous view overlooking the city from Queen Anne Hill. May be a little busier than usual due to festival at Seattle Center but some street parking should still be available.  Located at: 211 W Highland Dr, Seattle, WA 98119

Kerry Park

Like the Space Needle, this option to see the city view requires a ticket but it’s a pretty gorgeous view. Located at: 700 4th Ave., Seattle, WA 98104

Columbia Tower

Capitol Hill and Ballard are two great options if you would like to just spend part of a day strolling around Seattle. Capitol Hill is the heart of the LGBTQIA+ community in Seattle and generally the heart of the city, and the biggest concentration of nightlife. Grab lunch and take it to Cal Anderson Park to sit in the sun, explore Elliot Bay Bookstore, get brunch at Oddfellows, ice cream at Frankie & Jo’s, all in the same area, with plenty more throughout the area. The Starbucks Refinery, headed down the hill towards downtown, is a popular tourist destination (though not the original, that’s at the market). There are plenty more independent coffee shops to choose from as well. Ballard is an old fishing village a bit north of downtown. A little bit removed, it’s (a bit) easier to find street parking and more laid back. There’s still plenty of shops to explore and restaurants to try.

Neighborhoods To See

Dick’s is a Seattle staple. Simple but delicious burgers, fries and shakes. It’s a place where you can still get a full meal for under $10 and they also pay their workers well including tuition reimbursement. They are a pillar of the Seattle community. Open until 2AM. Worth trying if you’re out and about and in the mood for a burger. Multiple locations including Lower Queen Anne (near Seattle Center), Broadway (Capital Hill), Lynnwood (closest to hotels and wedding venue) and more. The original location is near Wallingford at 111 NE 45th St., Seattle, WA 98105.

Dick's Drive-In

The most unique store ever. If you want a pin of a meme or plastic chicken or anything else completely random, this is where to go. Nothing else like it, and a Seattle classic. In the Wallingford area, another small but nice neighborhood to visit. Not far from Greenlake. Located at: 1300 N 45th St, Seattle, WA 98103 If you’re in the area and need dinner, Bizarro’s is an incredible Italian place nearby. Fancier than the name implies but also random kitsch items hung from the wall and ceilings, not pretentious but incredible food.

Archie McPhee

The Washington Park Arboretum holds a world class collection of woody plants. 230 acres of gardens, natural areas and wetlands. Open every day dawn to 8pm, free of charge. Located at: 2300 Arboretum Drive E, Seattle, WA 98112. Japanese Garden is worth seeing (does require ticket).

Green Lake, a 2.8 mile loop, is a great place for a walk, bike ride, picnic or to rent a paddle board, kayak, pedal boat, row boat or water bike at the Boat House. Large playground and wading pool available for kids. There is a PCC Natural Market nearby to grab picnic supplies. There are two lifeguarded swimming areas: the west beach at 7312 West Green Lake Dr N., near what has been called the Bathhouse Theatre, and is now Seattle Public Theatre the east beach at 7201 East Green Lake Dr. N., near the Green Lake Community Center and Evans Pool. Local tip: it is safe to swim but important to shower once home/at the hotel after swimming in Green Lake or Lake Washington Parking is limited in the main parking lot by the playground/community center/Evans Pool but plenty of street parking is available in the area. Greenlake Park 

In our neck of the woods, this beach is modeled after Coney Island. Grab some fish and chips at Spuds. Have a picnic on the beach. Or enjoy a fancier meal at Salty’s on the water. One of our favorites is Marination Mai Kai for Hawaiian food, cocktails and a lovely patio overlooking the water. That is a bit farther than the main business district, at the Seattle Water Taxi dock (a great option for getting over from downtown Seattle) and next to the kayak and paddle board rental outfit. Alki is busy during summer months with people walking, biking, sun bathing by day, playing beach volleyball and enjoying bonfires by night in the various first-come first-serve designated fire pits. Discovery Park is a 534 acre natural area park operated by Seattle Parks and Recreation. It is the largest city park in Seattle, and occupies most of the former Fort Lawton site. The site is one of breathtaking majesty. Situated on Magnolia Bluff overlooking Puget Sound, Discovery Park offers spectacular views of both the Cascade and the Olympic Mountain ranges. The secluded site includes two miles of protected tidal beaches as well as open meadow lands, dramatic sea cliffs, forest groves, active sand dunes, thickets and streams. Around Town

We’ve not yet been but have heard great things and hope to go this summer. A little day-trip to a beach island north of Seattle (near Everett. About 35 minutes north of wedding venue itself). Ferry is separate from Washington State ferry system. See website for details and reservations. Ferry terminal located at: 607 10th St, Everett, WA 98201

Jetty Island

A lovely beach town. Walk around to shops, grab coffee, sit by the beach. The Washington State Ferry to Kingston also departs from here. Drive-on recommended to see the sights. Once in Kingston it’s a short drive to Poulsbo, the “little Norway” of Kitsap Peninsula. Poulsbo is an adorable town on the water with Scandinavian stores and host of the annual Viking Fest. Hikes near Issaquah

Bellevue Botanical Garden

In Puyallup. Otherwise known as “Do the Puyallup! [Fair]” About 45 minutes south of downtown Seattle. An annual state fair known for adorable piglet races, a petting zoo, livestock and agriculture competitions (cutest goats, cows and largest pumpkins etc.), FFA and 4H competitions, craft shows, greasy food of course, rides, a gondola and music performances. A fun day if you’re looking for activities while here. They also have concerts at night (they often bring some big names throughout the month. Tickets for concert are sold separately and include fair entrance). Runs August 30-September 22. Located at: 110 9th Ave SW, Puyallup, WA 98371

Washington State Fair

If you’re looking for some nighttime fun (gambling, concerts, nightclub and more) this is a late night option. Most are open 24/7 in a city known for closing early (though alcohol service, where available, does still close at 2am). Generally only federally recognized tribes in Washington State have gambling rights. With this, there are some large fun casinos run by some of the many different tribes in the area. Farther Afield

This a beautiful short day trip to the falls. No hike required. Parking is across the street with access via an overpass. Falls are free and open to the public and are breathtaking, with some interesting historical information to peruse. The falls, like everything in Seattle and around us, are located on land of Coast Salish Peoples. The Snoqualmie Tribe owns and manages the falls and Salish Lodge. Salish Lodge, located on site, has a few bar and restaurant options if you’re interested (note: on the pricier side but some tables directly overlook the falls). This is the hotel represented in the cult classic show Twin Peaks (though the scenes were actually filmed in Oregon). Stop by the town of Snoqualmie nearby for some ice cream or vegan food or venture a little farther east to North Bend if you’re looking for more Twin Peaks nostalgia. If you want to go on a really deep dive, keep going east to Roslyn to see the town where Northwest Exposure was filmed. You can then keep going east if you want to see the classic Bavarian town, Leavenworth.

Snoqualmie Falls

A little farther than Issaquah, and even more options. Easier, more difficult, lakes and waterfalls. See website (alltrails.com) for ideas. One favorite is Mason Lake, about 25 minutes east of North Bend. A steep hike at times but worth it when you arrive at w gorgeous lake for swimming and a picnic.

Hikes near North Bend

Mount Rainier can be seen from the city on a clear day, at which point we all say “the mountain is out.” It is definitely worth seeing closer up for a beautiful day of nature and incredible views, if you have the time. *PLEASE NOTE timed entry reservations are now required to enter Mt. Rainier National Park. See nps.gov website for details. Mount Rainier is the most heavily glaciered peak in the lower 48 states, is an active volcano and “one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world” (as an eruption would be catastrophic due to the large amount of glacial ice). It last erupted 1000 years ago. It sits at 14,411 feet above sea level. The mountain was originally called Tahoma, meaning “mother of all waters,” by native people of the Puyallup tribe. Make a day trip of it from Seattle to one of the multiple visitor centers or make a trip if it with a reservation at a camp site or a lodge. The two main visitor centers we would recommend, driving from Seattle are Paradise via the Nisqually Entrance: 107 miles, 2 hours 20 minutes (without traffic) Sunrise via the White River Entrance: 95 miles, 2 hours 15 minutes (without traffic)

Mt. Rainier

There are some great hikes and drives in the Olympic National Park. Seeing the peninsula/Olympic Mountains is absolutely lovely. There are views of the ocean and Vancouver Island, meadows, the 60 active glaciers and old growth forests. Some hike options attached (website). “It is hard to imagine that a park known for its towering glacial peaks would also be famous for its beaches and tidepools—but Olympic is no ordinary park.” “Olympic National Park contains over 650 archeological sites. The vast amount of archaeological sites inside Olympic National Park help document the area’s 10,000-year history of human occupation.” The Olympic Peninsula is the original land of eight indigenous peoples including the Makah, Quileute, Hoh, Quinault, Skokomish, Port Gamble SKlallam, Jamestown SKlallam, and Lower Elwha Klallam. Olympic National Park

One or the quietest places in the US (presumably because of all the moss insulating the forest) the Hoh Rainforest is breathtaking. You’ll see old growth trees and the richness of a temperate rainforest. Whether you like camping or staying in a nearby lodge or hotel, if you’re looking to explore while in the area and like nature, this is a must see. Would be a really long day trip (4 hours drive each way), at least one overnight most often. Drive by the gorgeous Lake Crescent on the way there or back.

Hoh Rainforest (Olympic Peninsula)

Less than three hours from Seattle, the views are incredible, with some great hiking options.

North Cascades National Park

One of the most magical places on earth, if you have time to visit while you’re here. Take a walk on the beach at low-tide and see sea creatures in tide pools (look at tide table for this to know best day/times on any given week), maybe catch a glimpse of bioluminescent plankton at night if you’re lucky, incredible star gazing far from the city, kayak and/or bike around, take a whale watching tour and see Orcas. There is so much to do and also a gorgeous place to just rest and relax. There are multiple options for where to stay - bed and breakfasts, hotels and camping. Generally Lopez is the quietest option (Odlin County Park great for camping, many options for airbnb etc. too) and our favorite. The main town is lovely and relaxing, with two grocery stores, a bookstore, restaurants/coffee/bakery/ice cream, a museum, thrift shop and a few boutiques. Biking around the island is a really fun way to get around and some bike rental outfits will drop off bikes to where you’re staying. [Shaw Island is actually the quieter option but that’s because they don’t really have places to stay/not sure if they really want non-locals dropping by…] Orcas is the next most populated and noticeably so with more businesses and more attractions. There are a few main business districts, principally East Sound across the island from the ferry dock. Mount Constitution and Lake Moran are two landmarks worth visiting; the latter has camping. Doe Bay (idyllic on the water and a bit more hippie-crunchy, with clothing option hot tubs, but still somewhat fancy) and Rosario (fancier, also gorgeous and on the water) are two well-known resorts on the island with plenty of other options available as well. San Juan Island is the “main” island with the main town, Friday Harbor, located at the ferry dock. Definitely the most touristy. Whale watching tours (which are lots of fun) depart from Friday Harbor. Roche Harbor is a resort option on this island, with many airbnbs also available. It is easy to hop between islands, just keep the ferry schedule in mind to plan arrival and departures. To visit, drive from Seattle to Anacortes and take ferry from there. Schedules available at WSDOT.com/ferries. Reservations for ferry from Anacortes to the San Juans highly recommended. A car or bike is recommended to explore the islands.

San Juan Islands 

Learn about the eruption of Mount St. Helens in the fascinating interpretive center. Consider making a little trip of it and staying in a yurt at Seaquest State Park next door! About 3 1/2 hours from Seattle. Mount St Helens Visitor Center located at: 3029 Spirit Lake Hwy, Castle Rock, WA 98611

Mount Saint Helens

Get ready for the best gelato you have ever had in your life. Serving small batch gelato, in unique flavors and classics, by the lovely Chris and Sophie (a dear childhood friend). Just because Sophie and Alana grew up together in Girlscouts you might think we’re biased in our review. But we’re not. This is actually just some incredible gelato. A more than a worthwhile stop if you’re coming back from the Olympic Peninsula or Portland. Or a day trip on its own. Walk the Olympia waterfront, see the state capital building, have some fresh oysters at Chelsea Farms and come here for amazing gelato and espresso. Original location at: 222 Capital Way N. Sophie's Scoops Gelateria

Worth its own mention. If you are going anywhere near the Key Peninsula, on your way to or from Bainbridge, Poulsbo or the Olympic Peninsula, it is worth stopping here. Delicious lunch and dinner options (closes at 7pm though), coffee, wine and beer and the most incredible homemade cakes you’ve ever had, always changing always incredible. Port Gamble, where it’s located, is also a very quaint town on the water, with a couple shops, lovely waterfront and kayak rentals. Located at: 4719 NE State HWY 104, Port Gamble, WA 98364

Butcher & Baker Provisions

Off the beaten path. A fun and educational experience for kids and adults alike (with dress-up and play areas to explore and learn, a blacksmith at work, and an informative tour). Recommended if you are bringing kids and/or looking to explore. Bring a lunch or snacks; no food service on site but they do have picnic tables to lunch. Not far from Northwest Trek.
