The Proposal

Our anniversary trip, unbeknownst to me would turn into the most memorable day of my life. It began with waking up bright and early before the sun rose. We made our way to Lee’s Ferry along the Colorado River near Marble Canyon, AZ. We boarded a boat that took us to Glenn Canyon Dam. That is where our day of kayaking began between the magnificent canyon walls. We floated past the famous Horseshoe Bend, AZ. Spending the next eight hours basking in the beauty. Stoping along the way to dig our toes into the silky sand, relaxing along the shores. All while watching nature and its creatures go on about their business. Before we knew it, the sun was nearing its end, as we drifted along, we held each other’s kayaks together. Going with the flow of the river. I proclaimed that in that moment the view was the best we had seen all day. He asked, “would you want to make one more stop!” We came to shore taking everything in. As I sat and immersed myself in the moment, he was pacing around. Speaking out loud, I expressed how wonderful the day had been. He asked me if we should take some sand with us, as a memory. I hesitated and said in a confused tone, “why?” After a few minutes, I finally said you know it’s after 4, we should get going. I began gathering my stuff and clearing my kayak. With my back turned, he said “I have a gift for you…” I slowly turned back to him, and there he knelt. He said the words I had been waiting so long to hear, “Will you marry me!” It was surreal… I didn’t answer! I hugged him so tight and we kissed. It felt like time stood still. Eventually pulling away, I finally answered, “YES!” Then he placed the ring on my finger, revealing to me the inscription “…you’re the one I want to go through time with…”, a lyric from Time in a Bottle, by Jim Croce. My heart melted, he then said, “this is why I asked if you wanted to save some sand,” I was euphoric, immediately blaring out, “yes! from right where you knelt!” Afterwards my heart fluttered as we drifted away from shore. I could not believe it, my adrenaline was high and my body was shaking. I couldn’t hold in my excitement, screaming “I GOT ENGAGED!!!” Some fishermen applauded us. We approached them as they offered us White Claws to toast the occasion. They were bitter but we laughed and just smiled back at one another. It was a perfect day, a perfect engagement, with a perfect ring from a man who is perfect for me. I could not have asked for anything more.
