Alex and I met on the second day of college in chemistry lab when we were randomly paired together to be lab partners. Though we were in the band together, I did not realize it until half way through the season. Through band and being in the same major, our schedules were often very similar, so we spent a lot of time together. I was always interested in her but never did anything about it because I thought she had a boyfriend or would not be interested in me.

Then, in the fall of sophomore year, I saw a post on Facebook that her mom had tagged her in indicating that she was single. After that, I started to perceive things that she was doing, like wanting a picture with me at the Iron Bowl, as displays of interest in me. I later found out that wasn’t her intention but, it gave me the confidence to ask her on a date. She didn’t realize that I thought it was a date and she somewhat stood me up. I was very disappointed and thought that she had caught on to my interest and was trying to shut it down. After the date fell through, I was on my way to my parents’ house for Christmas break when she texted me and apologized for it not working out and asked if I intended for that to have been a date. I told her yes and we started texting every day over Christmas break. We learned a lot about each other through that time but I was still nervous about how our personalities would work together. That year, Auburn was playing in the Birmingham bowl so we were back together for a few days in the middle of the break. It was during this trip that we decided that we wanted to try dating. We went on our first date to see The Force Awakens and had a really good time. Once we got back to school we started spending a lot of time together especially since we had all of our classes together and did our homework together.

Two years after our first date Auburn was playing in the Peach Bowl. I had been telling Alex that I would probably propose sometime during the spring or summer semester since we were planning on getting married after we graduated but I knew that if I was going to surprise her, I would have to do it on a timeline she didn't expect. Disguised as a two year anniversary date, I met her in Birmingham at the same movie theater to see The Last Jedi. After the movie we went back to the park bench where I asked her out on our first date. It was there in the back parking lot of the hotel that we stayed in with the band two years earlier that I proposed. We then went to a great dinner at “The Club” in Birmingham where we had our band banquet for the Birmingham Bowl. Through the ups and downs and the high demands of school, we have made it through and we will continue to no matter what life has in store for us.
