Things to Do in Washington, D.C. This Fall

Autumn is one of the most beautiful times to visit Washington, D.C.—crisp weather, colorful foliage, and a cozy atmosphere that makes exploring the city even more enjoyable. If you have time between wedding festivities, here are some highlights to help you make the most of your stay:

Iconic Landmarks with Fall Charm

The National Mall is especially striking in the fall, with tree-lined paths glowing in shades of red, orange, and gold. Take a walk from the Lincoln Memorial to the U.S. Capitol, stopping by the Washington Monument, MLK Jr. Memorial, and World War II Memorial along the way.

Smithsonian Museums (Free & Indoors!)

Cooler weather is a perfect excuse to explore D.C.’s world-renowned (and free!) Smithsonian museums:

National Museum of American History – home to everything from First Lady gowns to the Star-Spangled Banner

Air and Space Museum – a favorite for kids and adults alike

National Gallery of Art – classic and modern masterpieces, plus a relaxing sculpture garden

Tour the U.S. Capitol

For a uniquely D.C. experience, consider taking a guided tour of the U.S. Capitol Building. You can reserve a public tour through the Capitol Visitor Center, but we highly recommend calling your congressional representative’s office instead.

Going through your representative gives you access to additional areas—such as the House and Senate galleries, and even the underground tunnels used by members of Congress. Tours are free, but spots fill up quickly, so reach out early if you're interested!

Charming Fall Neighborhoods

Capitol Hill: Known for its leafy streets and historic homes, especially beautiful in the fall. Stop by Eastern Market for seasonal produce and local vendors.

Georgetown: With cobblestone streets and waterfront views, it’s made for autumn strolls. Grab a warm drink and window shop along M Street.

Dupont Circle: Lively but relaxed, with bookstores, art galleries, and tree-covered sidewalks perfect for wandering.

The Wharf: Enjoy fall cocktails by the fire pits, take in the views, or hop on a river cruise for a different look at the city.

Where to Eat & Drink

Washington, D.C. offers a fantastic food scene, with cozy spots perfect for fall dining:

Le Diplomate – French brasserie favorites in a warmly lit setting

Old Ebbitt Grill – a classic D.C. institution, great for oysters and people-watching

Mi Vida – modern Mexican on the waterfront with festive energy and great margaritas

Fiola – upscale Italian with seasonal tasting menus and an intimate feel

Café Milano – a Georgetown staple known for Italian fare and elegant ambiance

The Grille – a sleek, modern steakhouse with upscale American classics

Zaytinya – Mediterranean small plates from acclaimed chef José Andrés, perfect for sharing

Warm up with cocktails at Off the Record (below The Hay-Adams) or try something inventive at Barmini by José Andrés.

Outdoor Spots for Fall Foliage

Tidal Basin – stunning fall reflections from the Jefferson Memorial to the FDR Memorial

Rock Creek Park – perfect for a scenic hike or casual walk

U.S. Botanic Garden – filled with fall blooms and peaceful trails

National Arboretum – ideal for a quiet afternoon surrounded by nature and vibrant leaves

We hope you take some time to enjoy everything D.C. has to offer this season.
