Just two kids in blue corduroy jackets...
Our story began in the spring of 2015 when we were both encouraged to run for office in our school's FFA chapter. We ended up being chapter officers together over the next two school years. During this time we became good friends, would often pick on each other, and even took a couple shop classes together. It took six years for us to learn that we both secretly liked each other back in those FFA days, but at the time, we weren’t sure if it would actually work out.
Leading up to the proposal, Alexis always told Sean the same two things: she wanted to be surprised, and she wanted her family there so she could tell them in person afterward.
Since joining 4-H at the age of 10, the Morrison County Fair had been a summer highlight for Alexis and her family. Once Alexis and her siblings started showing animals at the fair, it became their "family summer vacation." They would borrow campers from family friends to stay at the fairgrounds, rather than drive back and forth each day. When Alexis started dating Sean, he was roped into the tradition and everything that came with it—washing animals, bedding stalls, helping with livestock shows, and, of course, "large sausage" pizza night.
Friday, June 21st, started like any other fair day: waking up early and ready to help out with whatever was needed. After helping with the animals, Alexis spent some time braiding hair for the younger 4-H girls. While doing so, she got a call from Sean, and later, a text asking her to come to the fish house where they were staying. She thought the text was a little odd—maybe something was up—but she also figured he might just need help finding something.
When she opened the door to the fish house, Sean was standing there, holding the ring in a small black velvet box. He got down on one knee and asked, "Alexis, will you marry me?" She was so surprised that she asked if he was joking. Sean had expected Alexis to jump up and down with excitement, but she was so shocked that she walked away three times, trying to process it! Finally, she said, "Yes!" and they spent the rest of the fair weekend sharing the exciting news with some of their favorite people.
