Guests are invited to visit, enjoy the grounds and learn more about the family legacy of stewardship. The Hills & Dales Estate—preserved by the fourth generation of the Fuller E. Callaway family—is open to the public for the education and enjoyment of the community.

As you stroll the well-trodden paths, descend the terraces, sit in the seclusion of the rose bowers, or pause to gaze up at the magnificent home, you are always in the presence of Sarah Ferrell and the Callaway women, three remarkable women who made Hills & Dales a home and its gardens a national treasure.

Completed in 1916, the 13,000 square foot home was designed to flow gracefully into its gardens—a series of dwarf boxwood parterres planted by Sarah Ferrell, which have adorned the terraces of the hill for more than 175 years and is considered one of the best-preserved 19th-century gardens in the country. The classic lines of the home, designed by renowned architects Neel Reid and Hal Hentz, have now silently watched over the beloved gardens for a century.

Those hedges remind the couple a little of the ones in Sanford Stadium...Go Dawgs!!! I wonder how we will choose to include the memory of our precious Munson on our special day...

Strange LaGrange Walking Tour

Picture of Strange LaGrange Walking Tour
136 Main Street, LaGrange, GA 30240

Southerners have always been known as great storytellers. So, when you combine this treasured art form with a dose of folklore, small town secrets and things that go bump in the night, you know you’re in for a treat during spooky season. This is what you get on the seasonal Strange LaGrange Walking Tour. Led by the gregarious Southern spirit guide and docent Lewis Powell, it’s a combination haunt jaunt, history lesson and an overall great way to get to know the city, up close and personal.

You’ll journey down Main Street into the heart of town and past the site of a murder on the square back in 1896. You’ll also learn about possible paranormal activity at the LaGrange Art Museum, which started out as the county jail in the 1890s. That’s a bit spooky unto itself!

City Hall has also seen lots of strange activity over the years. (Yes, insert your own joke about government here.) But is it haunted? Just try to explain away the footsteps, voices, crashing mirrors and elevators going up and down on their own. Hmmm.

Even if you don’t believe in ghosts, you’re guaranteed to learn something interesting about the town’s history along the way. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water. The tour starts on the sidewalk in front of the archives building. It’s appropriate for all ages and the route is paved so it’s easily accessible. Call ahead if you have any concerns. It’s best to get tickets in advance on Eventbrite.
