Avon Old Farms Hotel

Take Exit 35B to Route 218 West. Follow Route 218 West (Cottage Grove Rd) to Route 189 (Bloomfield Ave). Make a right at the light. Follow Route 189 to major intersection. Make a left at light. Follow Route 178 West (Mountain Ave turns into Loeffler Rd) to Route 185 West (Simbury Rd). At light, make a right. Follow Route 185 to end (note: go through metal overpass bridge). At light, make a right onto Route 10/202 North (Hopmeadow St). At approaching lift, make a right (note: Park and Ride lot on left) onto Winslow Place.

From I-91 North and South

Take Exit 39, Route 4 West Junction-Farmington. Follow straight on Route 4 (Waterville Rd.) to Route 10 North. Make a right onto 10 North. Follow approximately 6 miles. Make a left onto Route 44/1- West-Avon. Follow 44 West to the 3rd traffic light. Make a right onto Route 10/202 North (this is Simsbury Rd which turns into Hopmeadown St) and follow approximately 4 miles. At traffic light make a right (note: Park and Ride lot on left) onto Winslow Place.

From I-84 East and West

Take the Exit for Junction 291 (windsor). Take Exit 1, to Route 218 West (Cottage Grove Rd) to Route 189 (Bloomfield Ave). Follow directions: From I-91 North/South (above) to The Riverview.

Travel

Hiking: The Metacomet Trail, named after a local Native American chief, runs from Meriden CT to Lake Sunapee NH, including the entire length of Simsbury. The views from this ridge line trail are spectacular, especially from Heublein Tower, which was built in the 1914 by a local industry magnate (a liquor distiller) as a summer home. Tours of the tower are free. On warm summer days with mild breezes you may be see hang-gliders taking off from the cliffs near Heublein Tower and riding the thermals. To get to Heublein Tower, take Route 185 to the park entrance, Park along the road near the trailhead. Hike to the ridge and bear left to the tower. Parks – The Town also operates ten municipal parks throughout the Town including Schulz Park a gem of a garden in the heart of Simsbury, that includes many lovely old specimen trees, as well as lovely flower beds maintained by the volunteers of the Simsbury Beautification Committee.The State of Connecticut operates four state parks located within Simsbury: Great Pond, Penwood State Park, Stratton Brook State Park, and Talcott Mountain. These parks offer a number of picturesque hiking, biking, and picnic opportunities. Farms and Wineries

Flower Bridge: The graceful arc of this bridge is festooned with flowers and lights, maintained by the volunteers of the Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge. This bridge is on a popular bike route and crosses over the scenic Farmington River. Heublein Tower can be seen in the background. It's a definite "photo op" for any visitor! The address is 1 Old Bridge Rd and it can be accessed the bridge from Riverside Rd or Drake Hill Rd. <a href="http://www.simsbury-ct.gov/culture-parks-recreation/pages/the-old-drake-hill-bridge" target="_blank">The Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge is a must see</a>.

Flower Bridge

There are various put-in and take-out points for canoeing or kayaking the Farmington in Simsbury.<ul><li>Alsop's Meadow: this is actually in Avon. There is a dirt road from Rte 10, just south of the intersection with Rte 44, behind Nassau's Furniture store. It goes about 2/10th mile to the parking area next to the river.</li><li>The Pinchot Sycamore: see above</li><li>The Simsbury Crew Team Dock: just down-stream on the left after passing under the flower bridge and Drake Hill Rd Bridge.</li><li>Curtis Wright Park: On Rte 315 in the Tariffville section of Simsbury</li><li>Tariffville Park: at the end of Main St extension in Tariffville.</li><li>Behind "The Mill" on Rte 189 (just across from the intersection with Elm St) in Tariffville. The Mark Twain House &amp; Museum, a National Historic Landmark in Hartford, Connecticut, was the home of America's greatest author, Samuel Clemens (a.k.a. Mark Twain) and his family from 1874 to 1891. It is also where Twain lived when he wrote his most important works, including Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Prince and The Pauper and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. A stunning example of Picturesque Gothic architecture, the 25-room home features a dramatic grand hall, a lush glass conservatory, a grand library and the handsome billiard room where Twain wrote his famous books.

Mark Twain House & Museum

The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center includes the <a href="https://www.harrietbeecherstowecenter.org/visit/hbs_house.shtml">Harriet Beecher Stowe House</a>, where the author lived for 33 years, the <a href="https://www.harrietbeecherstowecenter.org/visit/ksd_house.shtml">Katharine Seymour Day House</a> , the <a href="https://www.harrietbeecherstowecenter.org/visit/visitor_center.shtml">Visitor Center</a> with<a href="https://www.harrietbeecherstowecenter.org/store/">museum store</a>, and <a href="https://www.harrietbeecherstowecenter.org/visit/gardens.shtml">historic gardens</a> all located in <a href="https://www.harrietbeecherstowecenter.org/hbs/nook_farm.shtml">Stowe's Nook Farm neighborhood</a>.

Harriet Beecher Stowe Center

Hill-Stead is the first architectural project of Theodate Pope Riddle (1867-1946), fourth registered female architect in the country, early proponent of historic preservation and caretaker of the family art collection. Designed as a country home for Theodate's parents, Alfred and Ada Pope, the 33,000 square foot, 1901 Colonial Revival mansion has welcomed over 870,000 visitors since opening to the public. Hill-Stead is considered "perhaps the finest Colonial Revival house and museum in the United States" (National Historic Landmark Report) and houses some of the most important Impressionist paintings in the world, including works by Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, and James McNeill Whistler. A print collection spanning 400 years and including pieces by Albrecht Dürer, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Jean-François Millet and Japanese woodblock artists Hokusai, Hiroshige and Utamaro rounds out the collection. Established in 1946 as a cultural resource for the public in perpetuity, the museum is one of the nation's few remaining representations of early-20th-century Country Place Estates.Each year Hill-Stead Museum utilizes its historic home, landmark art exhibit, and 152-acre estate to offer over 4,000 tours and an array of programs in art, architecture, gardens, and natural science. In keeping with the Pope family's tradition of bringing literary, musical, and educational opportunities to the community, the museum presents concerts, lectures, workshops, family festivals, and the nationally acclaimed Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. With its in situ furnishings and collection, the museum offers a unique glimpse into the lifestyle of a well-to-do family at the turn of the 20th century and becomes a well-rounded cultural experience, more than just a day at a museum.
