Our Story

Our Story

A Poem by Brian DiDonato

He was in his chair.

The day had come and gone.

The screen gave off a glare.

He’d stared at it since dawn.

Another day inside.

Another day of work.

A job where you reside

Felt much unlike a perk.

Hidden in this hole,

He’d answer all the calls.

A fish grows to its bowl,

And he had reached the walls.

The world was closed for all

As it had closed for him.

His habitat was small.

His hair needed a trim.

He’d moved from far away.

His network here was few.

He questioned why he’d stay,

And that’s when he met you.

Glowing on his screen,

Real or wondrous lies,

He cast you in his scene,

From first he laid his eyes.

For you had made a match,

And chosen him to see.

And with this perfect catch,

I found out he was me.

And I could feel my worth.

My story wasn’t told,

But I could move the Earth

And choose what could unfold.

My eyes were opened wide.

My world had brightened much.

My self had missed a side,

That I could nearly touch.

And so I answered back,

And tried appearing smart,

And jokes that I would crack

Would maybe win your heart.

We then met face to face,

Well, on a screen at first,

My heart began to race.

My mind forgot the worst.

And this then was the feel

I thought would last a season,

That time would likely steal,

But did not for some reason.

We went to meet at last.

We lived somewhat apart.

The drive went by so fast

The pace set by my heart.

And as I parked my car,

I never could have known,

That moment, now so far,

Was the last I’d be alone.

I met you at the park.

You had a perfect smile.

We stayed till it turned dark.

We held hands for a while.

We’d meet again in fact,

Every single week.

When you were what I lacked,

You’re all that I would seek.

Weeks and months and more,

No task at hand but fun.

Games played on the floor.

Picnics in the sun.

Hiking in the mountains,

Duets of voice and keys,

Jumping over fountains,

No power in a freeze.

We lived too far apart,

This wouldn’t work with you.

To tend my fragile heart,

We got a place for two.

You’re beautiful, intelligent,

Sweet as there exists.

My time was poorly spent,

Any second that I’ve missed.

You took my normal life,

Upgraded it for free,

Removed the pain and strife,

Then gave it back to me.

Our story here is told,

At least a little part.

But since we’re not yet old,

I only know the start.
