Fall 2018Bruce and Amanda met while working at the physical plant at Ferris State University. On days when they clocked out together, Bruce would walk Amanda to her car and have short conversations, mostly teasing her about the Hello Kitty sticker on her black Impala.Spring 2019Amanda went off to Ann Arbor for a student internship at Michigan Medicine, which led to a full-time position in 2020. Bruce remained at Ferris State University to obtain his Bachelor of Applied Science in HVACR Engineering.Spring 2020Bruce graduated with his HVAC degree and secured a full-time position at Hurst Mechanical in Grand Rapids.Summer 2020Bruce and Amanda reconnected through Facebook and Instagram and arranged a fishing date. COVID was in full swing, so no restaurants were open for dining. They only planned to meet on Saturday but ended up arranging to meet again on Sunday.In August 2020, Bruce met the entire Dunneback family when he filled in as an alternate golfer for the Dunn-A-Wack. Bruce was a trooper and golfed in his work boots!Fall 2020Bruce and Amanda finally went on their first official date in public. They went from place to place in East Town Grand Rapids, having a drink and trying an appetizer at each stop.LET THE LONG DISTANCE BEGINFor months, Bruce and Amanda alternated weekends to see each other. There were only a handful of weekends when they didn’t meet, most of which were during hunting season. Committed to one another, they fully incorporated each other into their lives. During this time, they helped facilitate four moves, attended countless weddings, birthdays, reunions, and much more.Winter 2023Bruce and Amanda started seriously looking for a home together. They toured numerous homes in Howell, Jackson, Leslie, Munith, and other areas. That dream ranch home—on acres of land, with a pole barn and few neighbors—was out there somewhere!Spring 2023In early spring, Amanda and Bruce visited Grandma and Grandpa Nyenhuis’ home for church and lunch. They were waiting on news about a house offer they had submitted earlier in the week. During lunch, they received the call that their offer had not been accepted. This was the second declined offer in six months, and Amanda was starting to feel discouraged about the home-buying process.Bruce suggested they take a walk down by Porter Lake to get some fresh air. That’s when Bruce grabbed the ring from his truck, walked with Amanda to the dock, knelt down, and asked her to marry him. They may not have bought a home that day, but something even bigger was in the works!
