Most people know that Bruce and I met while we were students at MSU. What most people don't know is that we actually met the summer before our junior year during Gatorade camps, a year before we became friends . I was delivering coolers full of Gatorade and water to IM East, and needed a hand carrying them into the gym. Naturally, I found the best looking student athletic trainer to ask for some help. He pointed me to Bruce (kidding!) and it might not have been love at first sight, but we both kicked ourselves for not getting the other's number by the time we had unloaded the gator and parted ways.
Fast forward another year (we had both forgotten about each other at this point) and Bruce found himself working with the track and field team. When I had a nagging pain in my shoulder, I asked a staff athletic trainer, Brian, for help. Having worked under Brian with the baseball team, he called Bruce over to evaluate my bum shoulder. Looking back, it was this moment we both knew we were doomed. I couldn't resist the smart, blue eyed gentleman, and he couldn't say no to the sassy, athletic woman he now had the pleasure of working with every day. We slowly became better friends as he put me through a daily rehab program to strengthen my shoulder, and started having weekly "family dinners" with our best friend (and accomplice) Aly. One week, dinner with "the three of us" turned into dinner with "the two of us". Bruce and I ended up talking well into the night, connecting like old friends that hadn't seen each other in years. The next day Aly said he had the biggest grin on his face when he told her we had hung out just the two of us.
Since dating your athletic trainer is widely frowned upon, we figured we would just remain friends and maybe become an item after we had graduated. Fate had other plans and decided to intervene during finals week when I was too tired and cranky to make myself dinner before a review session. Bruce scored major brownie points by inviting me over and making me dinner, and as I was leaving to go study, he kissed me as we said goodbye. Since then we've never looked back.
