Lots of things happened in 1997; great movies like The Fifth Element, Starship Troopers and Contact were released, the Mars Pathfinder became the first rover to operate outside of the Earth-Moon system, Notorious B.I.G. was shot and killed, and Amber and Brad met for the first time in a Blockbuster Video.
Like many kids growing up in the 90s, both Amber and Brad visited their local Blockbuster frequently. That day, both had come with their respective moms to pick out a movie. Amber was being wheeled around the store due to a broken ankle and a dislocated growth plate that required a cast up to her hip and Brad was sporting a green Bush t-shirt and a blond bowl cut. Amber pointed out his shirt to her mom, Amber had just seen Bush in concert early that year, they were one of her favorite bands. They discovered that both been to the show and Amber and Brad's mom, Ann, talked for a while about it. Brad, in typical fashion, stayed mostly quiet.
In the summer of 1998, Amber's sister, Stephanie, moved to Brad's neighborhood and she started spending most of her time there. It wasn't too long until Amber had made friends with Brad's friends, and eventually Brad himself. The group spent the summer running around the neighborhood, playing videogames and making frequent trips to 7-11 for Slurpees. When the new school year started they remained friends.
On June 18th, 1999, after a few weeks of being encouraged to ask Amber out by their mutual friend, Brad asked Amber to be his girlfriend on the playground of Truman Elementary School. They have been attached at the hip pretty much ever sense.
Amber and Brad had discussed getting married many times over the years, but they always wanted to wait - for more money, a better time, a more stable future - but in 2015, Brad had waited long enough. He bought a beautiful engagement ring in January of that year, but continued to sit on it, wanting to wait (just a little more!) for "the right time." Amber's birthday passed, a wonderful trip to Colorado for their anniversary sailed by, Brad started to consider popping the question at Amber's family Christmas get-together. On September, 13th, the two spent the day at Deana Rose Children's Farmstead feeding baby goats and eating apple cider donuts at Louisburg Cider Mill. Brad had been trying to find the best time to propose the whole time, nervously fiddling with the box in his pocket throughout the day; he even considered proposing on the side of the road after asking Amber if she wanted to pull over so he could drive. They had finally ended their day, full of Pad Thai, and Brad still hadn't found the right way to ask Amber to marry him. As they walked through their house, he looked outside, "I'm going to go out back for a little while, want to come with me?" He asked her about the flowers lining their fence, the same flowers that have always been there. Confused, she turned around to see him holding a ring and gesturing awkwardly. He proposed to her in the backyard of their home, surrounded by Rose of Sharon in full bloom, and accompanied by their oldest cat, O.C., who was thoroughly unimpressed. Given their life together, it was perfect. Of course, she said yes.
Over the last 18 years, Brad and Amber have grown up, moved out, moved back home, moved out again, bought a house, started careers, had adventures, suffered immeasurable loss, faced terrifying obstacles, loved and cared for a cat or twelve and laughed as much as possible. They are so happy to finally start this new chapter of their lives and they can't wait to have you share the day with them.
Both the ceremony and part of the reception will be held outdoors, so please dress accordingly and for your comfort.
A barbeque dinner will be provided. If you have any dietary restrictions or have other questions about the menu, please feel free to reach out to us.
O.C. is an 15 year old flame point Siamese who has been with Brad and Amber since they adopted her at 11 months old. She gets all the special treatment in the house, including trips outside on a leash to eat grass and drinks from the sink on demand, so it's only appropriate that she would be asked to be the Meow of Honor.
Simon entered Brad and Amber's lives just under 7 years ago. He is a giant baby with the best blinks and can charm anyone out of a piece of deli meat. Everyone who meets Simon loves him, so we just knew he had to be our Best Cat.
