You can get permits at REI. If you want just a taste of the Cascades - we LOVE Todd Lake. It is a 1.7 mile loop around an alpine lake. Tumalo Falls the trail is short but steep to the top of the falls. Lucky Lake is also beautiful. It is about 3 miles to the lake with a bit of elevation gain. Shevlin Park is one of our favorites. The longest trail is around 6 miles but there are lots of shorter ones near the river. If you are looking for something longer let me know.
