Our Wedding

When reflecting on our relationship, I am reminded of the biblical story of Hannah. Hannah, the wife of Elkanah from the tribe of Ephraim, faced profound sorrow due to her inability to bear children. In contrast, Elkanah's other wife, Peninnah, had children and used this to ridicule Hannah, exacerbating her grief. Despite Elkanah’s love and his attempts to comfort her—famously saying, "Am I not more to you than ten sons?" (1 Samuel 1:8)—Hannah’s longing for a child remained deep and unfulfilled. Growing up, I found myself identifying with Hannah's sense of yearning, though my longing was not for a child but for a meaningful and fulfilling connection. As I observed friends and peers navigate relationships, I struggled with rejection and unreciprocated interest. These experiences, repeated over time, gave rise to insecurities and a persistent feeling of inadequacy. The turning point came when I shifted my focus away from seeking a relationship and toward becoming the best version of myself. In this season of self-growth and surrender, something remarkable happened. Much like how Hannah’s prayers were eventually answered in the birth of Samuel, my own quiet, persistent prayers were fulfilled in an unexpected way. I met Ana, a person who embodied the values and qualities I had long hoped to find in a partner. The depth of my gratitude mirrored Hannah’s joy when she finally held Samuel in her arms—a profound sense of amazement and thankfulness for prayers answered in God’s perfect timing. Our love story, like Hannah’s, is a testament to faith and timing. It reminds me that the seasons of waiting and trusting are just as important as the moments of fulfillment. Meeting Ana felt like my own personal miracle—a reminder that when we align our desires with patience and faith, extraordinary things can happen. Ana and I met through online dating, which I believe is a testament to how the Lord can use any platform for His good. In reflecting on what initially caught each other’s attention, we both agreed it was the clarity in our profiles: we each openly declared that a relationship with Jesus is the number one priority in our lives and expressed a desire for a partner who shares that same sentiment. Our first date took place at a coffee shop. Despite my efforts to remain composed, I couldn’t ignore the nerves I felt—especially when she walked through the door. Words truly fail to capture how stunning she looked. After ordering our coffee, we sat down and began talking. I set the tone early, sharing my belief in keeping things H.O.T.—honest, open, and transparent—and admitting that small talk has never been my strength. Thankfully, she was receptive, and our conversation quickly became deep, engaging, and meaningful. I was struck by her insight, thoughtfulness, and intelligence, and we became so engrossed in conversation that we didn’t realize the coffee shop had closed until an employee politely asked us to leave. Not wanting the evening to end, Ana suggested we go for a walk, and I happily agreed. It was the perfect continuation of a date I’ll never forget. In April 2024, I sought Ana’s father’s blessing to marry her. During our lunch, he suggested I propose in May during an event he was hosting at their home for their Bible study group. I agreed it was a wonderful idea, but due to unforeseen circumstances, we ultimately decided it would be best to postpone the engagement. One thing about Ana is that she knows what she wants and pursues it without hesitation. During this time, she began to wonder if a proposal was on the horizon. My consistent response was, “I’ll propose when the Lord gives me the go-ahead.” Ana then mentioned that the weekend of June 9th would be the last opportunity for a while when her entire family would be together for the summer. Taking this into account, I discreetly informed her family that June 9th would be the day I would ask Ana to marry me, all while keeping her completely unaware. On June 8th, Ana and I spent the day together. At one point, during dinner, she casually remarked, “Today would be a perfect day for you to propose.” I kindly responded, “I’m not proposing today.” The disappointment on her face nearly broke my heart, but I knew I had to stay firm and stick to the plan. The next morning, I attended church with Ana and her family. Afterward, I returned home, called her mother, and was told to be at their house by 4:30 p.m. I also contacted her brother and sister-in-law, shared the plan, and sent them a Zoom link so they could join the moment virtually. Due to heavy traffic, I arrived at her parents' house around 4:45 p.m. and parked my car in the barn to keep my presence a surprise. Her family informed me Ana was on her way but managed to delay her with a quick errand—asking her to pick up cheese (thank God for cheese!). I quickly changed outfits, and that’s when the nerves really set in. While celebrating with her family and ensuring her brother and sister-in-law were on the Zoom call, I anxiously waited for her arrival. When Ana finally walked onto the back deck, she greeted her brother Max and her father before turning toward the house. That’s when our eyes met, and in that instant, she knew. Though I can’t recall every word I said when I asked, I do remember the most important part: she said “yes.” Now, here we are, hand in hand, stepping into the life the Lord has called us to. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” –Psalm 32:8. -Jalil Malik
