We met the way all great modern love stories begin—at work. I had just moved across the country to New Bern chasing a new adventure, and he had recently made the big move from Morehead City to be closer to his family (and unknowingly, closer to me). The very first thing I said to him, as he walked in for his interview, was: “Wow, you’re so tall.” The very first thing he said to me? Most likely a sarcastic comment laced with a level of wit and intellect I still pretend to understand. Despite that impressive first exchange, something clicked. On our first date, we grabbed lunch and saw Mufasa—a cinematic masterpiece, obviously—the connection felt was evident by the fact that we could spend time watching or talking and it never once felt like we were separate. As the music played and the movie came to a close there was a sadness from having to leave the closeness but also an excitement of all that was to come, we both knew this was something special. Like, forever kind of special. Since we work together, we spend basically 24 hours a day with each other—yes, really—and we’ve learned two things: (1) true love is never needing a break from someone, and (2) energy drinks help. A lot. But in all seriousness, our shared passion for helping kids and making a difference has brought us even closer than we imagined possible. We started as coworkers, became best friends, and now we’re soulmates preparing for a lifetime of inside jokes, long talks, and love that just keeps growing. We can’t wait to celebrate this next chapter with the people we love most—starting with you.
